Windows Forum / Windows Vista / Mail / May 2008Cannot open Word .doc from email attachments
Since I reinstalled Vista and then updated with SP1 when I try to open an email attachment that is a Word .doc file it will not open and gives an error message that the file type does not have an application associated with it. The .doc file extension is associated with Word and I have re-associated it several times. The file will open if I save it elsewhere or drag it to my desktop and then open it. Is there something in the registry or elsewhere than can be modified to correct this annoying problem? You're welcome. I tried this link and learned that it is applicable when one has Word installed. I have Works 8.5 and this does not work. Any other solutions? I cannot open .xsl file either. I have recently changed from XP where opening files was no problem. I have been out during this interim. I have gone through a couple of excerises whereby I did save the attachments into my documents and subsequently opened them. From this point I chose "Select a program from a list of installed programs." and selected MS Works. From this I selected the word processor link for a .doc attachment and the spreadsheet link for the .xls attachment. While this worked it surely is cumbersome. Is there a quicker, better way? This is a necessary first step. From now on when you double-click that type of document, it should open in the correct app. It still does guarantee that you will be able to open that attachment type from inside Windows Mail. Do you have Microsoft Word installed?
