Can you save the attachment, and then open the saved file outside of
Windows Mail?

I have not tried this and out of frustration I have requested that the
attachments be sent to me in a different format and deleted the initial
e-mails. My lack of experience and impatiences. I must leave now for a
meeting so any response will be awhile before I get to it. Thanks. Lowell

It is important to first confirm your ability to open document files
outside of Windows Mail, before you attempt to fix a problem with
opening them as an attachment inside Windows Mail.

Gary, pardon my extended delay in reacting. I have been out during this
interim. I have gone through a couple of excerises whereby I did save the
attachments into my documents and subsequently opened them. From this point I
chose "Select a program from a list of installed programs." and selected MS
Works. From this I selected the word processor link for a .doc attachment and
the spreadsheet link for the .xls attachment. While this worked it surely is
cumbersome. Is there a quicker, better way?
Thanks, Lowell

You should only have to go through that exercise once, since
that screen has a preselected option for "Always use the selected
program to open this kind of file." This is a necessary first step.
From now on when you double-click that type of document, it
should open in the correct app.
It still does guarantee that you will be able to open that attachment
type from inside Windows Mail.

Hi Gary, I have just been searching for someone with the same problem I have
not being able to access DOC file in my e-mails. I just saved it to my
documents and tried to open it and the same error occurs. You seemed to help
that other lady. Any ideas? Mandy

In order to open DOC files, you need a program that will open those.
Do you have Microsoft Word installed? If not, you can install the free
Word Viewer:
