I have the 'saved' emails off of my old hard drive from my Outlook Express's
'inbox', outbox', etc. on a disk , but I don't know how to get them into my
new Windows Mail. They are .dbx files. Thanks, Lynne

Follow the directions here in the WinMail section exactly:
www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm

Also update to Vista SP1
(http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/windowsvistasp1.mspx) to
ensure you have all the WinMail updates and to prevent troubles.

Do have all the .dbx files from the Outlook Express setup, not just the ones
that contain email?  If so, create a directory on your new hard drive and
copy them all to this directory.  Make sure the .dbx files are all
read-write, not
readonly.  Then start Windows Mail, click on File, then Import, then
Messages,
then Microsoft Outlook Express 6, then Next, then go on from there.

Just out of interest, is there any workaround for people who have NOT copied
Folders.dbx, and also have not got access to the old data source?

I've read of a workaround that involves setting up an Outlook Express
account on some other old computer, creating enough folders to make sure
it has the same list of folders, putting at least one message in each of
these
folders, and then using .dbx files from this account in place of any missing
ones from your old account.

I knew that one, and it works. I was really wondering about someone with
Vista....

For Vista, you then have to copy them over to the Vista machine and
add them to the directory holding the others before you tell Windows
Mail to import that entire directory.

I haven't read of any way to create them using only a Vista machine.

Doesn't DBXtract work in Vista?

You have the correct programs. <VBG>

DBXpress (www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/) will extract messages from just about
any size dbx file (DBXtract chokes on large files) and then the messages can
be dragged into WinMail folders just as eml files in OE.

OEX (www.oehelp.com/OEX/) has many features and works both in OE and WinMail
(except 64 bit at the moment) and will allow the users to point to a
non-corrupt dbx file (unless its huge) and import the messages from it
directly to the WinMail folders.  The dbx file does not have to be
read-only; folders.dbx is not required, and the import can occur across a
network.

Hi,

After having tried various of methods without improvement, you can
have a try to use special utility to repair your Outlook Express dbx
file. I know one, called Advanced Outlook Express Repair.
Fortunately , It worked rather well for my corrupt Outlook Express dbx
files last time. I think it may be helpful to you. You can download it
from the following address .Its web address is http://www.datanumen.com/aoer/
