I use NIS, turned off it does not make a difference. I tried synchronising
but then Mail gives the same error message. Send and Receive do work
separetly!
It annoys me that after 7 clean reinstalls and 1 month later I still have
problems with the software and not just Mail I might add. Hopefully it is
adjustable somehow. Thanks again.

A few email providers object to the order in which Windows Mail
does a combined send and receive. If you are using one of these
email providers, you can't fix this but you can make combined send
and receives less likely by clicking on Tools, then Options, then
Send. If there is no checkmark in the box before Send messages
immediately, click on this box, then Apply. Click on OK.
For problems in Windows Mail caused by most versions of the Norton
antivirus program (and they will eventually create such problems), just
turning off the Norton program seldom helps. You usually have to
uninstall the Norton program instead. You then often need to run this
cleanup program to take care of what the uninstall left behind:

You may even need to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add the account again.
If this cures your problem, you may want a replacement antivirus
program that doesn't cause such problems in Windows Mail. Most
versions of the McAfee antivirus program and a recent version of the
Trend antivirus program are bad choices; they cause problems in
Windows Mail also. I recommend either avast! or AVG, either
one with a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that scans
email.

You don't scan outgoing mail for viruses?

As far as I can tell, I don't have any viruses long enough for them to
get attached to outgoing mail. Scanning incoming mail for viruses
causes problems in Windows Mail; it's enough to detect them when
they try to leave the incoming mail. I don't know if scanning outgoing
mail for viruses also causes such problems.

If you have viruses resident on your system, something is badly wrong
with the real-time protection of your antivirus program. Also see
