Windows Mail opens in taskbar

This is a week-old Gateway computer with Vista and Windows Mail on it. I
have my mail account set up (it's "mchsi" Mediacom), but when I click on the
mail icon on my home page (Excite) , I get a notification in the taskbar
only. Then I have to click on that notification in the taskbar to get my
mail to open. I don't know why this is a two-step operation. I've got rid of
the Norton that came with this computer, and have AVG Anti-Virus, but have
the e-mail scanner disabled. I'd like to know how to get the mail to open up
in a new window and not the taskbar. When I right-click that icon I only get
the choice of managing what's ON the taskbar, there is no "properties"
there. I can only add or remove what's ON the taskbar. I also have Windows
Mail set as my default mail. I haven't found this question in the newsgroups
yet. Can't even find this question when I search for it on Google. Is this
the way this Windows Mail works? Any help - I'd appreciate it. Thanks, Barb

The Norton uninstall is likely to leave some problems behind if you don't
run
this cleanup program:

You may even need to remove your email accounts under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail and add the accounts again.

If you'd rather have a separate icon for starting Windows Mail, go to your
desktop,
double click on Computer, then C:, then Program Files, scroll down the list
to
Windows Mail, then double click on it. Right click on WinMail.exe if it
appears
on the list, or WinMail otherwise. Click on Create Shortcut. When it
refuses to
create the shortcut in that directory, click on Yes to put it on your
desktop instead.
Then you should be able to make it start already open by closing it while
it's open.

I rather doubt that Excite has programmed a button on their home page
for Windows Mail. Do you mean the Mail icon on Internet Explorer's tool
bar?

If you want one-click opening of WM from any screen, just place a
WM shortcut on the Quick Launch bar. To do so, Start, All Programs,
right-click on Windows Mail, "Add to Quick Launch".

The way I handled this same problem was to create a keyboard shortcut for
Windows Mail (Ctrl+Alt+M) and it now pops up on the screen using that
shortcut. Niall
