You didn't wrongly assume I would right click on the photo. I tried it.
Really. Once again: (1) If I simply open the message with its imbedded photo,
I can click wherever I want, all over the photo, but it refuses to get
"selected", nothing happens, and there's nothing to click on to bring up a
right-click context menu. Really. (2) Only when I click on the "Reply" or
"Forward" button and can see the copied original message, including the
photo, can I select the photo by clicking on it. Really. But (3) Right
clicking only brings up the following context-menu options: Cut, Copy,
Insert, Select All, Paragraph, and Properties. A couple of other options, in
addition to Paragraph, which deal with formatting options, are greyed out. No
"Save As" option is visible, either active or greyed out, as far as the eye
can see. Really.
But even if you're right, which I guess assumes that I've been hallucinating
here, this is a non-issue for me now. What matters is that with your
suggestion pointing the way to a solution, which I ultimately discovered by
experimenting, I'm now able to preserve imbedded photos. It may be an awkward
way but it's one that works. So thanks again. Really.

Whoops! My face is red. I looked more closely to what happens when I simply
click on the original message to open, and although left-clicking on the
photo doesn't show any physical sign of selecting (framing) it, right
clicking anywhere on the photo does indeed call up a brief context menu,
including Save As. You were absolutely right and I apologize for any
confusion. I have a habit -- which I now realize isn't a good habit of -- of
first Selecting an item by left-clicking on it before left-clicking to see
the context menu. Strangly, this system works when I left click on the
message after I've first selected "Reply", etc. Anyway, problem solved and
thanks for your completely accurate help.
