I have the same problem and all emails remain in the outbox. I have been
gettng by emials by using my AOL account but sometimess when I am on the net
and need to forward a document, screen, video or page, I can't do it with
Vista; I have to save it in my docsuments and log into AOL and then send the
documents as an attachment.

Besides downloading that fix, you will have to run it and install it.
If you tried that, was there an error message?
Do you get an error message when you try to send?

I did install and ran the fix.  Nothing worked.  When I close out of Windows
mail I get a message saying there are unsent messages in  by outbox and askes
if I want to send them.  I hit yes and a error message flashes on the screen
but it is too fast to see what it says.

That Microsoft fix usually tells you if it was not applicable to your problem.

Try this. Go to the Outbox folder and move any messages in there
to the Drafts folder. If any won't move and can't be deleted, let us know.
Try sending again.

Which antivirus are you running?

If you just downloaded it, it isn't likely to do much good until you install
it as the administrator.  Also, some users guess wrong on whether they
need the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version, and therefore have to try
installing both of them.  If both refuse to install, you may need to install
the Vista SP1 update instead, even though this takes hours longer.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936330

If the hotfix or update don't remove those messages from the Outbox,
you may need to go into the Outbox and move those messages to
the Drafts folder or delete them.  Then try to send yourself a short
message, and if this gives you any error messages, right click on them
and copy the entire error messages into your next message.

The host 'SMTP' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the

"SMTP" is not a valid mail server name. You must obtain the correct
server name from your mail provider. Who is your mail provider?

Sorry, but you misunderstand the terms, and that appears to be the entire
source of your problem.

Windows Mail is an email "client".  It is NOT a mail provider.     SMTP is
NOT a host or server name.   You have just not entered the correct server
name, and that's why you cannot send mail.   You may well have a problem
receiving, and for the same reason.

An email provider might be named as "comcast", or "Roadrunner", "pcabell",
"sympatico", "rogers", etc.   The mail provider will be running a mail
server or host (in fact more than one of them).

SMTP is not a server or host name.  It is the name of an email protocol, a
technical way to send messages.    A valid email server or hostname might
be, for example, "smtp.phub.bloor.toronto.rogers.com" or
"smtp.companyname.com".   SMTP actually stands for "Simple Mail Transfer
Protocol".

You need to contact the people you are paying for internet service (the
ISP),  and ask them for the actual name of the mail server.   Usually, the
ISP's web support pages will have explicit instructions with screen images
of exactly what you need to fill in and where.   The instructions may be for
Outlook Express but they are almost identical in Windows Mail.

There is one circumstance in which SMTP *is*  the correct entry, but it's
not a good idea to use it.   That circumstance is when you subscribe to
Cable internet, *and* you plug your PC directly into the cable box *and* the
ISP says this is the way to do it.

However, if your system is a laptop and you move it, or if you install a
router, your sytem will suddenly NOT send mail; you have to use the complete
SMPT server name.   So you might as well set it up that way in the first
place.

Window Mail is an email/newsreader program, not a mail provider.  Many
people choose their internet providers as their mail providers also, since
most internet accounts include one or more email accounts.
Dave - 06 May 2008 15:11 GMT
To use Windows Mail, you must first have an email account somewhere.  Like
with your Internet provider, or with Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.
What is the part of your email address after the @ symbol?

If your only email provider is Hotmail, then you can't use Windows Mail.
However, you can use Windows Live Mail. Give it a try:

You're confusing me because initially you said you were using
Windows Mail. Also, the error message you supplied looks like it came
from Windows Mail rather than Windows Live Mail.
If you do have Windows Live Mail, click the "Add an e-mail account" button
in the lower left corner. Once you give it your Hotmail email address, it won't
even ask you about things like server names. The setup will be fairly automatic.

Gary I tried that but it won't accept it. Somehow or other it got my son's
email address instead of mine. When I tried to "add" another email account,
but it refuses it.

Windows Mail will refuse to accept Hotmail accounts.
Are you certain you have downloaded and installed Windows Live Mail?
What does it say when you go to Help, About...

It says it won't accept HTTP and to install Windows Live Mail which I have
done.

Yes Gary, I have installed Windows Live Mail 4 times just to make sure, but
it still won't work.

Somehow you are getting the two email programs mixed up.
In the 14 months I have worked with WLM users, I have never
heard of it refusing to set up a Hotmail account.

How to get Web-based e-mail on your Windows Vista desktop
You may have tried to link Windows Mail to a Hotmail, MSN Mail, or other
e-mail account via HTTP forwarding. That's no longer supported in Windows
Mail ( here's why). But you can use Windows Live Mail for accessing
HTTP-based e-mail accounts in Windows Vista.

This is what I have done.

There's a possibility that when you installed Windows Live Mail (not the
only program with the abbreviation WLM), it was unable to hide Windows
Mail as thoroughly as it normally does when you install it, so you may
still be using Windows Mail even though you think you aren't.  Many
programs will make it clearer which version of which program you are
using if you click Tools, then something starting with About.

"Windows Mail" is to "mail provider" as
electric appliance is to electricity provider.
Do you see the difference?
