LOCAL FOLDERS NOT UPDATING

Hi

I recently bought a new Vista computer.

I had a Windows 98 computer previously.

I copied the "dbx" files from Outlook Express 5 into a temporary
folder on the new machine.

I imported them into Windows Mail (correcting the path error in the
import wizard).

Windows Mail crashed, and when I reloaded Windows Mail all of the
local folders had vanished except for the Inbox, which was
inaccessible.   After restarting it again a few times, nothing
changed.

Eventually I went to the folder store in AppData, and deleted all the
files in the Windows Mail folder, assuming them to be corrupted in
some way.

When I restarted Windows Mail, it recovered and recreated the Local
Folders structure for me again.

Back to square one.

I tried importing the "dbx" files again, and this seemed to work,
appearing under "Imported Folders".

All seemed well, but now for the problem.

If I want to create a folder, or delete a folder, or move a folder,
the change does not show up live in the folders list in the left
pane.

However, if I click on local folders, the change shows up in the right
pane, which lists the local folders tree in expanded form.

To repeat, Windows Mail seems to make the change to the folder
structure, but does not update the live folders list in the left hand
pane.

However, if I restart windows mail after creating, deleting or moving,
the change is visible in the left hand pane.

Any ideas what is going on here?

There's probably a triangle to the left of Local Folders in the left pane.
Clicking on in should make some folders appear or disappear, until
you click it again.  Does that help?

Hi

Thank you for taking an interest. I'll take a look, but I suspect it
may not.

I understand that the triangle is there to open and close the sub-
folders in a tree (replacing the + in previous incarnations of
windows).

Assume that Local Folders is open, so that you can see Inbox and other
sub-folders.

Assume that I want to create a new folder in Local Folders called
"Archive".

If I do this on a friend's machine, "Archive" immediately appears in
the Local Folders tree in the left pane.

If I do it on my machine, "Archive" does not appear in the left pane
until Windows Mail is restarted.

Just so that you folks know my level of knowledge, I am a reasonably
advanced amateur user, to the level of writing my own blogging engine
in MySQL and PHP.

Thanks.

It sounds as if the database got screwed up when importing.  Try compacting
and repairing the database with my Winmail utility (www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/
which is a wrapper for the the Extensible Storage engine utility).  That
might fix the problem.

Also make sure you have Vista SP1 installed and in addition see point 3
here:  www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 as AV software is known to corrupt
WinMail in various ways.

Hi Steve

Thank you very much.  I will give these a try, and post back.

Hi Steve

I have tried your utility thank you.  It did detect a corruption, and
stated that it had fixed it, but on restart of Windows Mail my problem
was still there.  I tried a fix with your utility again, and it
detected the same problem again as the last time (suggesting that the
fix had not worked perhaps).  So the problem remains, that it will not
update the Local Folders tree when I add new folders.

Oh well.

Thank you again.

Hi Julian,

It sounds as if a 3rd party program is interfering.  See point 3 here and
the section on WinMail:  www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

If that still doesn't help, then you may need to set up a new message store
location.  Post back if you need to do that.

It seems that the database got corrupt when importing.  Try
compacting
and repairing the database with Advanced Outlook Express Repair
( http://www.datanumen.com/aoer/ )that may help you.
