I am being asked for my incoming mail type (POP3 or IMAP, or other) and the
server; also need to find out the name of my outgoing email server (SMTP).

They depend on which email provider you are using.  Many people choose their
internet providers as their email providers also, since many internet
accounts
include one or more email accounts.

If you want to use Hotmail as your email provider, one of the types it
requires
is HTTP, which Windows Mail can't handle, so you need to download and
install another email program which can.  One of the suitable programs is
Windows Live Mail:

It already contains information about what Hotmail requires, so entering
your
hotmail.com address tells it most of what it needs to know about your
account.
