'Control Panel|Sound|Sounds', find "New Mail Notification" in the list and
change the sound file associated with it to what you want.

I did that and I could get the sound to work.  I changed it back to the
original sound and it works fine.

Sorry, I meant that I couldn't get the sound to work so I had to change it
back to the original sound.

That's very strange. You should be able to change it to any of
the sounds available. There is also a Test button there to try
it out. Did you try the Test button after you changed the sound?

Yes, I did.  I found a .wav that I like.  I added the sound to the file and
it'll play with iTune and other music program but it won't play the sound
from the Test Button.

If it won't play with the Test button, then it doesn't meet all the specs
for Windows system sounds. This topic is outside of my area of expertise
and not really related to Windows Mail. Perhaps you can find someone
with expertise in that area in the general Vista newsgroup.
