I am trying to help my cousin with her problem: she is trying to
download Trend PC-cillin virus control program..she has only until May
11 to get it done or she will lose her $49.95.  Problem is, she keeps
getting a message that the download cannot be completed while Windows
Mail is running.  We have everything we can think of; called Trend, was
referred to Microsoft and cannot find a thing there to help.  How do we
get Windows Mail to quit, or shutdown, so the download can be finished?
She doesn't even use Windows mail and cannot even find the listing for
it on Programs, or in the Add/Delete list in the Control Panel.  Please,
anyone with the answer?  Anne

Right click in the blank space in the bottom toolbar, then click on Task
Manager.
Scroll down the list it presents until you find WinMail.exe, then click on
it, then
click on End Process.

Note - if she uses Windows Mail, a recent version of the Trend antivirus
program (details not available) causes assorted problems in it.

I can't believe anyone would pay $49.95 for that piece of junk.
Tell her to demand a refund. Most antivirus vendors have a
customer satisfaction guarantee.

I told her to demand a refund. Trend will allow her to unlimited
downloads for the entire year...for an additional $7.99 for an "extended
warranty".  Trend was rated high by C-Net, over Norton and Macafee.
Guess she got duped.

Trend Micro's antivirus is not compatible with Windows Mail.
Many of us use a free antivirus, such as
AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

To Gary, or whomever replied on pointing to a blank in the toolbar,
etc...-thank you, thank you, thank you!-  You're a genius!  That worked.
We have tried so many things, gone to Trend and Microsoft for help,
read forums on Vista, everything imagineable, and found nothing.  Even
was told you cannot turn WindowsMail off.  I thankfully do not have
Vista on either of my computers, still have XP, mainly because of the
horror stories I have heard about Vista.  Just got a new laptop from
Dell and had them put XP on it for me.  But the Vistaheads website will
stay on my Favorites in case Barb, my cousin, has another problem.  It's
a great help and you people are so SMART!!  Thank you again.  I'll check
out the free virus deals too for my next time to sign up.   Anne
