Scrambled contacts

When I am creating email and click on "TO" and bring up my contacts they are
all scrambled. When I cancel the email and then click on "contacts" they are
all in alphabetical order. What happens when I use "TO"?

after you click on "To: "
In the Select Recipients window, you can click on the
Name column header 4 times to get:
first, last (a-z)
first, last (z-a)
last, first (a-z)
last, first (z-a)
