Is your Yahoo account one of the free US-based ones? If so, it doesn't
have POP access, only web (HTTP) access.
For $19.99 per year Yahoo will upgrade your account to Mail Plus,
which does have POP access: http://mailplus.mail.yahoo.com
Likewise, free Hotmail accounts have no POP access. However, if you
upgrade Windows Mail to Windows Live Mail, it enables access:

If you pay for Internet access, your ISP will give you a free email address
that has POP access. You can also get a free POP email account from
Gmail.

Note that these instructions cover both the IMAP method of
connecting and the POP method. Choose one of these, and
don't get them mixed up.
