You might want to check and reset your Power Setting Options. Also, some
third-party screen savers (if you are using any) can also conflict and cause
problems like you have described.
Thanks for your quick reply and your suggestion. I have just changed my power
saving options to "high performance", but am concerned that this may not be
the problem because I am using a destop, not a laptop on battery power. It
won't take long to find out, however, and I appreciate your feedback!

If all else fails, set your power options to Hibernate instead of Sleep.

You should also contact support at whoever manufactured your system.
This may require a driver update that doesn't come from MS.
