I have Vista Mail and I was wondering if when my computer goes to sleep mode
after being idle for some time does email still check for new messages. Also
my understanding is the mail program has to be running in order for it to
check for new mail messages whenever your mail program is set. Mine is set
at check every 15 minutes. Any got any answers for me.

For my copy of Windows Mail, it doesn't check for new messages during
sleep mode. If there's a way to change this, it seems to take some settings
outside Windows Mail.
One method I've found for preventing the computer from going into sleep
mode is to join the World Community Grid project.

Walter, short answer is that it will not check mail if your machine goes into
sleep mode. Yes, Mail program must be running in order to check for new mail
at whatever interval you have set it. If the sleep mode is a problem for you
then you can change the settings in Power Options from the Control Panel.
