I had the same problem setting up two days ago. Yiou must register your
Outlook software or it will not send any emails.

If it doesn't work, it probably gives you an error message when you try.
Copy and paste the complete error message, so we can use its
diagnostic information for troubleshooting.

The outgoing is commonly something like "smtp.optonline.net" or
"mail.optonline.net", but you say yours is "smtp.mail.optonline.net"

That doesn't sound right to me. Check the other two and do let us know if
either one works. Otherwise, call Optonline technical support for help.

Please don't give the OP 'guess' information. It is always best to
give them the authoritative source for that information, such as

You may well be right Gary. But as a mere amateur I sometimes find the longer
and more complex responses harder to follow.

By the way, I just tried the links you have posted, and they both go to
Outlook Express help sites. I thought this is the Windows Mail Group. Any
comments?

Many mail providers have yet to modify their OE mail setup instructions
for Windows Mail. Since the account setup part is pretty much the same
in both programs, setup instructions for OE will work in Windows Mail.

According to...
http://optimum.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/optimum.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1491

the server names should be ...
mail.optonline.net
for both POP3 and SMTP.

And you probably have to be connected to the Optimum network (at home, not
out somewhere else) in order to send email.
