I tried changing the port to 587 .Received this message

The message could not be sent. The authentication setting might not be
correct for your outgoing e-mail [SMTP] server. For help solving this
problem, go to Help, search for "Troubleshoot Windows Mail", and read the
"I'm having problems sending e-mail" section. If you need help determining
the proper server settings, please contact your e-mail service provider.

The rejected e-mail address was 'davida412@aol.com'. Subject 'test',
Account: 'pop.aol.com', Server: 'smtp.aol.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server
Response: '556 CLIENT AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED. USE ESMTP EHLO AND AUTH.',
Port: 587, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 556, Error Number: 0x800CCC78

Go to Tools - Accounts - youraccount - Properties - Servers

Under the section "Outgoing Mail Server"
[x] My server requires authentication
OK

Dave , thanks again. Your solution worked for sending e-mails.
However this morning I received the following .
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'windows mail', Server:
'pop.aol.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error:
10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Unable to get new messages. Any ideas? Thanks

I don't think AOL uses a POP server, only IMAP.  I didn't catch that on your
previous post.

Change the protocol to IMAP, and change the incoming server name to
imap.aol.com, and the incoming port to 143....

Tried your advice and received the following error message

Account: 'windows mail', Server: 'imap.aol.com', Protocol: POP3, Server

It appears you tried to change an existing POP3 account to IMAP.
Note that in the error message below, the protocol says "POP3".
You can't mix settings for the different protocols. Delete that account,
then create a new account, this time making sure to choose IMAP
instead of POP3.
