I switched from Outlook express, and it worked ok. Try it again, open windows
mail, click on File, Import, Messages, Outlook Express
See if it works.

Is there somebody there who can explain why Microsoft didn't make it easier
for us to import mail from Outlook Express into Vista? I've tried the
procedures listed in your answer and could not get them to work. This kind of
Microsoft crap just infuriates me even more and makes me agree with all of
those people who criticize Microsoft and Vista. Why is this so difficult? Why
didn't Microsoft plan for this and make it easier? Or even beyond that
question, why was it necessary to change the format of the messages so that
Vista can't use the same format that Outlook Express used successfully for so
many years. Microsoft likes to do that, to change things just for the sake of
changing them and not to make them better or easier. They like to keep their
customers off balance. "Surprise customers, we changed the format on
you...again."

It is easy to import them...
The only caveat is to watch the location where the .dbx files are located.
If you try to open that folder, then the path will have a duplicate folder,
and will tell you the files cannot be found.

Hello Dave,

It seems to be interesting, could you please explain more about your method
to import them...

Thanks,

Say you have a folder named C:\temp
you copy all of your OE .dbx and .wab files to C:\temp

Open Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail and click on File - Import -
Messages - OE6
Import from OE6 store directory
Browse

navigate to C:\temp
if you double-click on \temp to open it, and click on "Select folder"
the path in the browse box will show C:\temp\temp
which is incorrect

so, navigate to C:\temp, but don't try to open it.
The tendency is to open the folder, to see if the .dbx files are in there...
don't.

Dave - I am preparing to try your solution but had a couple of questions
prior to creating another "disaster". Re: "copy all of your OE .dbx and .wab
files " - can the import figure out where to put both .dbx and .wab files
with  a single import?  Will the Vista import create the same folders I
currently have in OE6 for both mail and the address book?
OOPS, one additional question: My OE6 address book has a "Main Identities
Contacts" folder with sub-folders. Above the "Main Identities Contacts"
folder is "Shared Contacts". When I previously imported my .wab file, only
the "Shared Contacts" displayed in Windows Mail but I was able to find a
person not in the list by using "Find People". Evidentally the additional
contacts/folders are there somewhere just not visable. How can I display them
if it occurs again on my next import attempt?

The mail-folders will look exactly the same, if you follow Daves instructions.
However, by using the Outlook Express 6-procedure, it will import the whole
'C:\temp folder' (as in the example) to Windows Mail, and i had to drag the
sub-mailfolders out from there to organize it better.
