What does a person have to do, short of throwing away Vista and Windows Mail,
to get the import system to work???

I have the file backup.pst on my desk top, and have tried to import it into
Windows Mail, several times, with no luck!!! What am I missing???
Dave - 19 Sep 2007 22:24 GMT
The only way to directly import a .pst file, is to install Outlook on the
Vista computer, copy the .pst file over, and open the .pst file with
Outlook.  then open Windows Mail, and import.

The other way is to open Outlook, export to Outlook Express format, copy
those files to the Vista computer, and import.

If your Outlook is 2003 or newer, you may as well continue using it.

I guess I don't understand the process, but I will try to do that... LOL

I don't understand what would be any different, if I just point to the pst
file, with Windows Mail, should it recogonize that file???

Thanx for your response, and I will get back to you in a day or two, when I
get the time to install M/S Outlook...

Thanx again,

That's the whole point, Windows Mail DOES NOT RECOGNIZE a .PST file at all,
not even a little bit.  WM, like Outlook Express before it, use Outlook
(which DOES recognize .PST files) to access the .PST file.  You, therefore,
MUST have Outlook installed in order to get anything from or add anything to
a .PST.  This leaves you two options:

1. Install Outlook on the Vista machine, copy your existing .PST file to the
Vista machine (DO NOT OVERWRITE any existing .PST files in this process),
open the .PST with Outlook (File|Open|Outlook Data File), then do your
import into WM.

2. Transfer your data from Outlook to Outlook Express on your old machine
(which has both programs installed), copy the OE .DBX files (including
Folders.DBX) to your Vista machine and import these into WM (which works
because WM DOES recognize Outlook Express files).

Hal and Dave!!!

Thank you for your help... It worked.... LOL

I don't understand why M/S can't put in the necessary software, to eliminate
these kinds of problems... It's almost as if the programmers just don't give
a damn about the users needs... They want to make it as complicated as they
can... I guess that is why they are known as MicroSucks... LOL

Thanx again...

From Microsoft's viewpoint, they want Outlook users to migrate
from Windows XP to Outlook on Vista.
I can't blame them for not wanting to encourage users from
downgrading from a paid app to a free app.

Where did you get the Outlook software to install on your Vista machine? I
need a lot of help here. I have a file of all my emails (pst) for the last 10
years from my old computer (XP) and now have a new Vista machine. I dont know
how to get the files into my new email. Thanks for any help you might have!!

If you dont have an OL or Office cd with which to install OL you cannot
Assuming the old PC that had OL installed has gone, your only option is via
a third party that has OL installed, and who is prepared to install and
convert your data for you

Are you planning to use Outlook on the Vista machine, or go with Windows
Mail?  Outlook 2003 and 2007 are fully compatible with Vista: earlier
versions, 2000 and 2002, will run on Vista , but have some issues.  What
version are you using on your XP machine?  If you do NOT want to run Outlook
on your new Vista machine, you should be able to install your existing copy
(the one running on XP) long enough to do the transfer from the .PST file to
Windows Mail because the issues that early versions of Outlook have with
Vista should have no effect and not apply to doing a mail/contact transfer.

I have been trying desperately to import .dbx files form an old machine (that
crashed and burned, except the hdd) into windows mail.  It will NOT let me do
it, nor does it even recognise that there are .dbx files in the directory.
How on earth can I make it recognise my OE 6 files?

I have even tried installing Outlook on my PC (I only have Outlook 2000),
and it keeps failing to install (not surprising).  I have moved to Mozilla in
the interim, but that program asks so many questions just to reply to one
simple mail, I need to get away from it.

If you still have the CD that installed Outlook on your old computer,
use that to install it on your Vista machine. It may not activate if you
have used more than the allotted number of installs, but it should be
sufficiently active to help with the import.

If you don't have your old CD for it, some, but not all, of the free trial
versions of Microsoft Office include Outlook.  That version should run
more than long enough to use it in the import.
