My first tests after installing the optional MPEG-2 codecs pack.... a DVD
inserted into the drive plays fine in WMP, but an SVCD doesn't, resulting in
an error message about the file type or lack of codec. I filed a report on
it.

Have you tried search for the right codec though? I mean, DVD's are the most
popular source of video I suppose at the moment, SVCD's aren't hugely in
demand are they. Bug it anyway, and maybe they'll put it in in the next CTP.

for a while I'm checking things with just the installed software and what is
available via Microsoft updates... there's only one MPEG-2 package from
Microsoft... no readme info about what MPEG-2 types are covered.

DVD's are the option for many, but for those without a DVD burner, SVCDs are
the best option.

My guess is the MPEG-2 codec pack is limited to DVDs.

Papa,

Thanks for clarifying.  I had seen somebody else this didn't work, but they
hadn't provided what the error was.

If you could provide two more data points, that would be great:
* If you click More Help/Web Help on that dialog, what codec does the help
page say you need?  If the help page doesn't have an exact answer, knowing
the URL of the web page you're taken to should provide that information.
For codec help pages that don't have friendly names, I can work with John to
fix those up.
* What specific SVCD are you seeing this error against?  That would help
make sure our test team can repro this.

Thank you very much for the information here,
-Zach

I made the SVCD a couple years ago using ULead's DVD Factory... it plays
fine on my other computers.

The help info was good, when I tried to use the DVD app... told me I needed
MPEG-2 codecs and went down the path to get the new MPEG-2 codec package as
an update of Visa... the download/install was all automatic and went well.

The message when I try to play the MPG file from the SVCD is generic... WMP
cannot play the file... the player might not support the file type or might
not support the codec that was used to compress the file... Web Help doesn't
go to any specific place.

copying the MPG file from the disc and then trying to import it into Movie
Maker gets a .... .. could not be imported message.

PapaJohn,

Where do you get the Optional MPEG-2 Codec Pack?  We have not seen this as
an additional download on MSDN.  Thanks.

I stumbled into it by using Control Panel > Windows Updates > Check for
updates > there were two updates available, one being the MPEG-2 Codec Pack
for Windows Vista.... I got it on 2/24/06.

Now there shows none available, so maybe the codec pack would have flowed
into the system automatically if I hadn't gotten it, as mine is set to
auto-update daily.

There are 3 msmpeg2 codecs in a new c:\CodecPack\Basic\dll subfolder

That is the one we are seeing via Updates, also.  Thanks.
