frankieboy - 12 Mar 2007 20:18 GMT Whenever I am importing or editing footage with Windows Movie Maker on Windows Vista Ultimate, I eventually can't even playback what I have edited. I keep pressing the play button but it does nothing and I can't even play what I have been working on. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is there a fix for Playback issues? Please can you help me?
Steve N - 13 Mar 2007 04:50 GMT Sorry if I'm stating the obvious here, but just in case... In order to playback video you have to highlight or 'click' on something, either the imported video at the top, or on the timeline on the bottom to play back what you've edited. If you click the mouse anywhere else on the screen you'll lose focus on the timeline, that is the Movie Maker's attention has shifted to something else and the playback will be greyed out.

Even after getting Movie Maker to focus on the timeline the video does not play. After adding several transitions, I was not able to regain focus. I went back a few transistions until I regained focus. Then I closed the project without saving it. I opened it again and it was in the same state that I left it and I was able to add new transistions. I saved the project and reopened it. I am now not able to play the timeline at all. Individual clips play and I am able to publish the time line. Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem in localized Dutch Vista Ultimate. Timeline items won't play even if I shift the focus to it.. My computer, Asus P5B-VM, Intel T6400, 2GB DDR800, Intel X3000, WD Sata2 250GB. All of the available latest drivers/firmware updates installed, so what's the problem? I never had probems with WMM under XP prof. SP2...

I can edit and everything, and watch the videos in my imported media area, but as soon as i try to preview my movie, the screen is just black and nothing happens. The play button doesn't even turn to pause. Also when i hightlight a certain spot on the timeline, the green bar in the preview window doesn't even move. This is really frustrating, because i'm working on a REALLY IMPORTANT!!!!!! project, that has to be done by DECEMBER!!!!

Musil - 17 Oct 2007 21:10 GMT As far as i can tell, i've solved MY problem. i don't know if this will help any of you. I had two songs and i had them overlap a little bit, so that it wasn't a sudden jump from quite to loud drum beats. I removed the overlap, and it apparently seems to be working ok again.

I'm having the same issues.

What footage type / file types are you playing with? If you use Task Manager's Processes tab and turn on the "Mem Usage", "VM Size", "Handles", "GDI Objects", and "Threads" columns, are any of those numbers abnormally high compared to the other applications running?
Is your system Aero-enabled?
Most commonly I've seen Movie Maker's performance degrade when the video card driver starts glitching, but if you're having problems over time that seems like something is leaking memory. Movie Maker went through pretty extensive stress testing, so I wouldn't really suspect that - but if you are seeing abnormal memory usage, I'd be really curious as to what third party plug-ins/filters are being involved here.

Please can you help me? iorob - 28 May 2007 19:35 GMT I'm having the same kind of problems, mostly when I start to add transitions, then the only way to play the video that I'm editing is by undoing the modification that I start to do.
It could be an error with the video card right now I’m using Intel X3000 and I have Windows Vista Home Premium.
If anybody has found a solution, please reply

Kaypants - 12 Jul 2007 00:28 GMT I can't playback, edit or do anything with it now, I have no idea what's going on with it. I restarted the Movie Maker and it's even worse now, I am just about sick of it!
Fernando - 01 Dec 2007 18:46 GMT I'm having the same problem, but only in .wmv files, it's ironic, because all other formats can be edited and the playback doesn't freezes, like AVI or MPEG. I have Windows Vista Ultimate, and i've installed "Vista Codec Package". And in windows photo gallery, when i try to play a .wmv, for example, one of the sample videos, I only see a glimpse of the video, then the program pops up a window saying "Windos Photo Gallery stopped working" and then shut itself down and just restart. Please, help!!!

Fernando - 29 Dec 2007 05:06 GMT I've a solution to this problem, I hope it works in your windows vista. Simply create a new windows account and try to play those videos in windows movie maker. I've done that and now i can finally edit .wmv files and the playback doesn't stop. I installed a codec package called "vista codec package", of course I uninstalled it. If you have a codec package, you should uninstall it before. I hope it works.

Please can you help me? mother of 3 - 11 May 2008 03:00 GMT I copied and pasted my work into a new project and it worked fine. It's a pain, but worth it if it means you can get your work done. You can only have one MM window open at a time, which is what is a pain, but relatively easy.
