Howdy. I plug my JVC GR-D93 using firewire and Vista sees it. I start movie
maker and select capture. It takes control of my camera and I start captruing
but the preview window remains black and no video is being captured. This
also happens with nero, and sony vegas 8. Please help me...

I've been waiting for Vegas 8 isn't out yet according to Sony's site,
you got a beta version or did you mean V7? Anyhow, in Vegas unless
they changed from the older version I'm using it comes with a separate
little applet called Video Capture. It is easier (for me anyway) to
control your camera from here rather than the main program.
In the main Vegas application on Menu Bar under Options click on
preferences. Then the video device tab. Under device change to OHCI
compliant IEEE 1394/DV. Click apply, then ok. Until you do this while
Windows might "see" the camera, it won't get controlled properly if at
all by Vegas which is really what you want.
Personally, I prefer to hook up the camera to computer via firewire
then feed the camera's video output to an external tv/monitor. This
should show you the video stream in real time as you capture and send
it to Vegas. If you rather not do this once the capture starts it
should display in the camera's LCD screen. While you can capture
directly to the timeline, there is no real advantage and in fact
better to capture so you always end up with a editable DV-AVI file
that gets stored on your computer's hard drive automatically with this
method. Since Vegas uses a ultra high quality codec from Main Concept
you can re edit the file over and over without any noticeable quality
loss.

Well here is a link to the new Vegas...

The camera lcd plays video as the software takes control of the camera and
capturing begins. But the capturing software, Windows Movie Maker, Nero
Vision, Sony Vegas all do not actually capture anything. The preview window
remains blank. I've reinstalled the pci firewire card also...

I thought you meant the FULL version of Vegas which is currently up to
version 7, I see you mean the Studio version which is on version 8.
Don't take offense, may sound "dumb" but you'd be surprised how many
people forget to:
1. Actually put a DV tape in the camera they want to capture from.
2. Switch the camera to the appropriate mode so it feeds the video
stream to the camera's firewire port assuming it has one.
Did you read the manual? I found it on the web. Look at page #36.
Do you have the OPTIONAL DV cable?
The manual also mentions drivers. Did you install them?
Does your camera support Vista?

It could be a faulty cable, or fiewire port in either pc or cam, check out
these items by testing with known to work ones. This could be the case even
though you get so far.
Some more hints on here
