I can now acess my xp machines via the vista machine but when I try to acess
the vista machine I am asked for a user name and password.

What user name what password

Create identical user accounts and passwords on all machines. Then the
authentication will work and you won't be asked for the user name and
password.

If you want to automatically log into one particular account without
using the Welcome Screen, you can:

Configure Windows to Automatically Login (MVP Ramesh) -

To get the same effect, use a blank password on the Vista computer. Be sure
to enable everything except password protection in Network & Sharing Center.

Passwords make networking work better in XP, Vista, and other operating
systems. Yes, the OP could use blank passwords but it wouldn't be my
first choice.

Please tell me how to disable password protection - this has been driving me
nuts for two days now - nothing I do seems to get around this problem
Thanks

Have you been able to resolve this issue?  I have exactly the same problem,
only I can go a bit further.  My XP machines can access files on the Vista
machine but Vista wants a password to access XP.  My Vista machine also does
not find shared printers on the XP machines.  Just wondering...

Hi Dan,

Networking a computer running Windows Vista with other computers running Windows
XP or earlier operating systems can be unbelievably complex.  There is just no
one solution.  Do you have a thread of your own, anywhere, describing your
individual problem in detail?  If so, we can look at your problem, and maybe
both of us will learn from the experience.

Is the XP computer running XP Home, XP Pro with Simple File Sharing, or XP Pro
with Advanced File Sharing?  Is the Vista computer running Password Protected
Sharing Enabled or Disabled?  You're going to have to activate an account on the
XP computer for network access, but what account depends upon your answering the
above questions.

I seem to have the same problem on XP Home and Professional, but for the sake
of simplicity, lets stick with the XP Professional machines and Vista.
Running simple file sharing, at least I believe so.  Password protected file
sharing is disabled.  Administrator account has network access.

OK, if XP Home is involved, then it'll be simpler if you do run SFS on XP Pro,
and Disable PPS on Vista.  Then, you have to Activate the Guest account on all
computers, for network access.

With Guest access, don't depend upon access to a lot of administrative tools
through the network, on any computer.
