I have networked vista pro with a network which ran xp and 98se. Vista will
handle files on the 98se machine, both shared files and read only root drive.
The 98se machine will not read the public file on vista and locks up when the
icon is highlighted. Additionally the printers on 98se can not be accessed
(error lots of 00s 38)Do I need to go into the registry or can I avoid this?

Looks like you've done all that can be done without going to a domain-based
server. To see previous discussions on this topic (June through August) do
a find in your news client for this newsgroup with "98" in the subject
field.

After some minor adjustments I can get a response on the 98se machine asking
for a password to access a file on the vista computer named with a few
letters and a $ sign. No user password is effective and returns a message to
try again.

After reading Rons long discussions ending with PChuk there seems to be a lot
of theoretical possibility of connection without any real answers .
Incidentally and perhaps why I can read 98se files from Vista out of the box
is that the 98se machine was setup with an xp netsetup disk and the two
machines are connected simply with a hub rather than through a router. The
hub connects separately to an ADSL router. XP can network with both vista and
98se through the router without any kind of user accounts or setup even when
given a different workgroup name.

So perhaps the only answer is to upgrade 98se to XP as Vista will not drive
my large format HP printers. Can I still get a licensed upgrade to XP?
