My company has two LAN segments: 192.168.42.x and 192.168.43.x

There is a broadband modem with 1 network port (RJ45).

Question
-------------

Can I put 3 network cards into an XP machine, one to 192.168.42.x
segment, one to 192.168.43.x segment, one to the broadband modem, and
thus use the XP machine as a router for internet access ?

Thanks.

hi sb5309,

No you cant use windows xp as a rounter. But what you can do is you can
use windows server 2003 Routing & remote access to do what you need. You
can either re-install server 2003 or run it off microsoft Virtual PC
2007.

Hope this helps

Cheers !!

Small note here, John......according to the following article, XP
Professional can be implemented as a router:

If this is valid information, then the OP also has the option of taking
the upgrade path from XP to XP Professional.  :-)

Hi Propman & SP5309,

My mistake sorry, yes it can on case by case basis do the following to
enable it.

Thanks propman.

We got a few computers (less than 10) in 2 subnets. We have one Windows
XP computer with 2 LAN adapters. We want to use this computer as a very
simple router in the middle of the two subnets.

In NT 4 we can simply open the properties of TCP/IP and check
“Enable IP Routing”.  However,  in Windows XP we don't have
this checkbox in TCP/IP properties. To make the same effect, we need to
change something in the registry.

Click “Start”, click “run” and enter
“regedit”.

Locate
“HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters”,
we can find a value called “IPEnableRouter”. Let's double
click it and set the value to “1”. We are all set then.

This is not good for large enterprises. But for some specific very
small businesses enabling Windows XP as the simple router will save the
cost, as we don't need to buy a new copy of Windows Server 2003 only for
the Routing feature.

.......and thank you for confirming that the information imparted on
that page was valid.  Much appreciated, :-)

Some problem here with semantics.

Regarding "...use the XP machine as a router for internet access ?..." -
technically/politically - No. XP can used as a "router" between "local"
sub-networks.

In sb5309's setup - XP would be configured for ICS with the disadvantage
that the computer must allways be on for Internet access.
