Hi,

I am trying to connect to computers. One has Vista Ultimate and the
other has XP Proffesional.

I have enabled the Remote Destop options on both OS's but neither
machine is being found/listed in the Remote Desktop Connection screen.

How can i fix this problem.

Also i have opened up my XP remote desktop connection port on my
router, but i cannot find my port number in Vista for remote desktop.
Anyone know what that number is?

Thanks.

P.S. Vista is connected to my router through the RJ wire and XP is
connected through wireless.

Can you ping each other by IP? I would check any security software first.

Which one do i ping, the router address assigned to the xp, or the xp's
real IP?

I tried the address assigned to the router of both my computers and
they both pinged fine.

I do not use any security software, only what's installed in vista/xp.

I also pinged using the computer's ip address and that was fine.

I also want to point out that when i'm in the router's html settings
page, I see 2 computers with my vista computers name and 1 name on my
xp.  I only own 2 computers.

Is my router being hacked by someone in proximity to the wireless???

On Vista, use ipconfig to find the IP address. On the XP do: telnet "Vista
IP address" 3389. Does the telnet get error? If yes, 1. make sure you have
enabled the remote desktop. 2) Try to start both computers with clean boot.

Hi,

I tried the telnet from XP and could not connect.  I have enabled both
computers Remote Desktop through Remote tab in computer's properties.
Still did not work.  Should i telnet from Vista?

I tried Safe mode networking, and clean boot also.  Not working,

I also tried to open a port on my belken wireless g router.  I
forwarded the port to the vista macine.  Still could not telnet connect
from XP.  I also forwarded that port to the XP machine and did not work.

Disabled all firewalls, still did not work.

Go back to my original post. If you enable file sharing, you should be able
to ping. If not, post back with the results of ipconfig on both computers.

I created a password in my account.  I then used remote desktop to
connect to vista, from XP.  Was prompted for a password.  I entered the
name and password from the vista account and clicked connect.  I still
got the unable to connect to remote host.

I tried to <browse> in the remote desktop drop down menu on XP and got
to WorkGroup window.  I clicked on the (+) sign and got the message "No
terminal servers present...".

And I still can't ping using telnet.

Here's the vista ip info:

Do i need to open ports on my router for file/printer sharing for all
computers?  How do i do that?

If i do this i will have to change the port numbers in XP right,
because vista already has the file/printer sharing ports.

Rrrr, why is this so difficult.

Can anyone show remote desktop for xp and visa in action please?

Would it be better if i just upgraded my xp to vista?

I was looking through my vista firewall and now i can't get the default
settings back to what they were.  "On" is selected but greyed out.

Since you're using Remote Desktop between two computers on your own
local area network, you don't need to open ports on your router.  That
would only be necessary to allow Remote Desktop access from computers
on the Internet.  For that, both XP and Vista use port 3389.

Just type the name of the computer you want to connect to in the
Remote Desktop Connection screen.  The computer doesn't have to appear
in the menu.

Ok I have tried to type the name of the computers into the remote
desktop connection list on both XP and Vista and neither worked.  I also
tried to type in the IP address of each computer and this did not work
either.

On XP I typed in my vista machine name and it prompted me for
credentials.  I do not have a name and password on either maching for
logon.

I get the error message on Vista: "Remote Connection cannot find the
remote computer."  I get a similar error message on XP.

Any Ideas?

You're welcome.

Since XP prompted you for credentials for the Vista machine, we know
that the machines are communicating with each other.  At that prompt,
enter the same user name and password that you use when you log on to
the Vista machine at its local keyboard.

To use Remote Desktop, your account must have a password.  It isn't
possible to connect remotely using an account that doesn't have a
password.

Is there a software firewall (Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, etc) on
either computer?  If so, configure it to allow Remote Desktop
connections.

Hi,

Ok i guess here's where i messed up during setup.  I did not setup a
password or user name on either computer, because I am the only user.
How do i back-track and setup a username/password for the network on
both the vista and xp.  FYI, i'd like to control each computer with the
other through remote desktop.

I do not have software firewall, unless its installed in my router.
Which i believe i have forwarded the correct ports, anyway.  I am using
windows in-built xp and vista firewalls.

You have a user name on each computer, which you can see in Control
Panel > User Accounts.  That's also where you can create a password
for your user account.

A software firewall can't be installed in your router, and there's no
reason to set up port forwarding in your router.

Make sure that the exception for Remote Desktop is enabled in the
Windows Firewall on each computer.

Go to Control Panel > Security Center and make sure that it show
Windows Firewall as the only firewall.

Ok getting very close now.  I started from the beginning from a system
restore on both computers.

I cannot connect to the remote desktop on xp through vista.

I can connect to vista using xp, but i get an error with user name and
password.

I also tried logging in to vista with a new user account in xp, but got
the prompt "restricted... terminal privileges...".

Any ideas?
