I am using windows vista, home premium, 32 bit, on a Gateway Laptop, model
#MT6821.  The operating system was loaded on the laptop when I purchased it,
and the following blue screen appeared at start up about once per month for a
year.  Now it is appearing almost every day.  Anyone able to help me figure
out how to get rid of this?  I am not stupid, but not real technical either.
Thanks in advance for your help.   Rick

I power up the laptop, and a blue screen appears stating:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.  A thread tried to release a source it did not own.

Technical Information:

First thing I would try is to boot into "Safe Mode".....before the
Windows logo appears, press the F8 key.  This will take you to a text
based screen where you can select a "Safe Mode" boot option.

Sometimes just by booting into Safe Mode and then rebooting in regular
Windows will clear up a problem.  Try that first and if you are still
experiencing a problem then you will have to start looking at such
issues as newly installed programs, viri, malware, drivers, upgrades etc.

I tried your suggestion, to be honest, I thought it was way too easy.  But,
fingers crossed, I have not seen that Blue Screen in a week.  Here is hoping,
and wanted to thank you for taking the time to write.

Regards,
Rick

Good to hear, Rick!  Thank you for taking time to post your success
story...sure it will be of use to someone else in the future. :-)

PS....yeah, easy solution but hey it just works a lot of the time.  Just
don't ask me for any in depth details on why it works 'cause I don't
have a clue!! <grin>

Hi Rick,

There are several different programs that I've seen that cause that error,
