Pc running Vista ultimate. On boot up "Preparing your desktop" appears on
screen. After a few seconds i'm left with a blank screen except for the
cursor. Ctrl-alt-delete brings up usual screen with various choices. Any
ideas?

Hi,

From Task Manager (ctrl/alt/delete) click "new task" on the applications
tab. Type regedit and click ok. Go to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Click on the key, then locate the shell string at right and double click it.
Replace the contents with just

explorer.exe

Click ok and close the registry editor, then logoff (if you can) and reboot
the system.
