Hi,

how do i kill a process that froze? ie. Firefox, IE, and all that, that are
not responding?

so far, i have tried "taskkill /im <pid>", and process explorer.

taskkill always returns a message telling me that a kill command has been
sent, but the process is still not killed.

process explorer, no matter how many times i try killing it, the process
still wont be killed.

seriously, this inability to kill processes that are frozen is getting
really, really irritating.
Richard Urban - 20 Aug 2008 20:52 GMT
Kill it through Task Manager. Right click on the process and choose "Kill
Process Tree".

OBVIOUSLY, this doesnt work. heh.

even in XP, and for running programs (the programs that Vista actually lets
me kill) using process explorer or taskkill produces a more immediate effect
than using task manager, which

Strange, I have never found a hung process that I can not kill off.

Hi,

Just a thought, but are you issuing the commands from an elevated prompt?

Hi, im new to Vista, so... what's an elevated prompt?

I'm signed in as admin, and even when i do the "Run as administrator" thing,
the process still wont be killed. is that wat u mean?

Hi, Ristar.

An "elevated prompt" means entering the command or starting the application
from the "Administrator:Command Prompt" window.  That's the Administrator
version of what some of us old-timers still call a "DOS window".

To open that window, right-click on Cmd.exe and choose Run as Administrator;
you'll have to furnish the password to get past here.  When the window
opens, note the word "Administrator" in the Title Bar.  Any command or
application launched from this window will "run elevated"; it usually will
automatically Run as Administrator without further password prompts.

sorry to but in but I am having a similar problem trying to end process on
wmp.exe it will end but then it keeps popping off and on in my list, and I'm
wondering if this is what is causing my PC to hang in shutting down screen?

Try the KB article below, use the kill tool. Run it elevated.

exist in my system.

In addition, what resource kit is the article talking about? there's no
downloads and i cannot find "kill" and "pview".. and have totally no idea how
to use "at". ><

If you are running Vista....it ain't mentioned. :-)
Ristar - 09 Sep 2008 17:59 GMT
yeah... that confused me for a little while. especially after i read posts
from some geeks in other forums where they talk about XP, 2k, NT and stuff
that makes them sound like they arent communicating in English.

since this is a Vista forum, i thought that thing URL may apply to Vista
too, even though its not on the list.

oh well, nvm. thanks for clearing up anyway.

Hi Ristar,

Have you sorted this problem? I have the same issue with killing
Counter-Strike on my vista. And it's so annoying! Have to
reset my hardware to sort this out.

Does anyone have the same problem? MS guys have you heard about that?

Thanks,
Ivan

Download Unlocker 1.8

isnt Vista pathetic?

not only does the processes hang for NO RHYME OR REASON, we have to depend
on a 3rd party freeware to solve the problem this OS (which costs $$) has.

lol... it's just like MS to produce such an OS. oh, and they conveniently
dont have a bunch of people who customers can contact regarding their s/w
problems, and we, paying customers, have to rely on forums.

wat a joke.

thanks for recommending Unlocker 1.8, i will try using it the next time
firefox hangs to see if it works.

Running Vista SP1 and various flavours of linux here....never had
Firefox lock up on me in either OS.....
Ristar - 29 Sep 2008 16:55 GMT
thats wat u think.

firefox locks up on me for no rhyme or reason. wat trolling? this is
PERSONAL experience, for goodness sake. and right now, im damned pissed that
i have to do a hardware restart everytime firefox hangs for no good reason,
because it just wont shut down or restart.

good for u that apps dun lock up on u, if u searched around, this problem is
COMMON. jeez.

I may be stupid because I don't get it! You claim FireFox hangs on you
for no good reason and you claim Vista is the problem! Did it ever occur
to you that the program that you are running is more likely to be the
source of the hang up? It seems obvious to me that if others are running
the same software under Vista without the problems that you are
experiencing then there is something wrong with either the installation
of the problem program or you have hardware issues.

Post your complete system specs, with a complete description of what is
happening, and you might get some useful help to solve the problem.
Ristar - 29 Sep 2008 18:06 GMT
"I may be stupid because I don't get it!"

this is probably beacuse u did not read the original post.

btw, this problem is not just restricted to firefox; other users have said
that winamp, and other apps hang on them. since i only use my laptop for work
only, i cited only firefox. u can read OTHER programs that hang for no good
reasons throughout the thread.

but to answer u properly; the problem is i CANT KILL a hung process (see
original post, and topic title). i have no problems with processes hanging,
until i used Vista, coz i cant kill em, and no kill = no restart OS.

System Spec: Duo Core 1.7GHz
Memory: 3GB

for the problem and description, it was stated in the original post. but
since im quite free now, i will describe it in greater detail:

After using firefox (or just open the browser and leave it for about
5-30mins, depending on the computer's mood), i find that i cannot surf the
web; the new pages are not displaying at all. A check at the network icon
shows that im still connected to the net.

So, browser problem right? fine. i click on the X button, and the window
closes, no visible instances of firefox running now.

then, i open another instance of firefox. it tells me that an instance is
open and so it cannot open another (or something like that) and i need to
restart/shut down my computer.

a check using Process Explorer shows that the firefox.exe is still running.
try to kill it using Process Explorer, doesnt work.
"taskkill /im <pid>" in command prompt doesnt work too. it says that the
force kill signal is sent, but the app is still running.

network problem? no. other apps, including IE still works.

so, the OS unable to force kill a process is Firefox's problem?

basically, no kill = no restart = hardware off and on = not good.

honestly, just tell me how to kill a hung process, and i'll be happy.

Have you tried Process Explorer?

Ristar - 29 Sep 2008 21:12 GMT
yes. process explorer, taskkill /F /PID, and task manager ALL doesnt work.

This is not so much a hung process, but something is holding Firefox
open (as viewed as still there in Task Manager).  This was a problem
back in one of the iterations of v2.x.  What version are you now
running?  3.2.3 is the latest.  Try closing some of the other tray icons
that maybe holding it open.  Like I found a setting in Skype that holds
Outlook open in the background.  It will be a third party, NOT Vista at
fault

If you use Task Manager and then highlight the firefox that is still
there and then click END PROCESS, you will get a warning but it should
close.

Not for 32 bit it's not. 3.0.2
Ristar - 29 Sep 2008 21:11 GMT
hmm... i didnt know about that..

anyway, im using Firefox 3.0.3.. im one of those that likes to keep stuff
updated.

using Task Manager, firefox.exe is listed under Processes.

im running pretty "cleanly", i think, considering that this laptop isnt the
brightest bulb in the block...

my current processes are (using Process Explorer):
under wininit.exe, a few svchost.exe, drivers for audio, VMware stuff,
mdm.exe, antivirus, zone alarm stuff, and the usual stuff...

for those under explorer.exe... other than the usual stuff like Windows
Defender, Audio ctrl panel, antivirus, synaptics touchpad, VM Hqtray i have:

zlclient.exe
teatimer.exe
msnmsgr.exe

Sorry, I see I had a typo in the latest Firefox version, it is 3.0.3.

Teatimer is part of Spybot Search and destroy.  I am not saying it is
the cause, but I would try uninstalling that part or running with that
part killed and see if Firefox still hangs.  With other AV stuff on
board, it is probably a good idea to just run Spybot as a stand alone,
say once a week and then close it down, rather than it scanning all the
time.

I would really recommend you download Autoruns, it is free and will show
you EVERYTHING that is starting and running.

Ristar - 29 Sep 2008 23:20 GMT
well, i have no problem with disabling the auto startup for teatimer, if that
fixes the problem... but are there any progs that checks for registry
changes, and prompts the user to allow/disallow changes real-time, like
teatimer?

i'll probly try it later to see if firefox still hangs, thx for the
suggestion.

it still hangs for no good reason with teatimer off.
Rendt - 29 Nov 2008 22:44 GMT
Has this problem been resolved? I have exactly the same experience, primarily
Firefox but also other apps going into Not responding mode, with no apparent
cause (even if just loaded and left to itself).
Unable to kill tasks. Tried different utilities, tried disabling anything
suspect, tried numerous malware scans.

What else could I try?

Vista32 Home Premium, Firefox 3, Comodo Firewall.
