Internet Explorer 7 Does Not Allow Printing

The Cat's Meow - 10 Jul 2007 15:57 GMT Okay, I just confirmed that my problem with printing a web page is Microsoft Explorer 7 under Vista Windows. You would think that since Microsoft owns Explorer 7 and Vista, that they would have been able to work together. Boy, what a mess.
I just used Mozilla Firefox and I can print a web page with no problem.
So, my question is, how do we get Explorer 7 fixed by Microsoft????
My printer is an HP Photosmart 8250 and prints all applications and prints Mozilla Firefox websites. So my conclusion is that it is not my printer.
Any ideas???

Cari (MS-MVP) - 10 Jul 2007 18:25 GMT Did you check the HP website for the updated drivers, in particular, the updated HP Director software... it's this application that is at fault.

The Cat's Meow - 10 Jul 2007 19:52 GMT Yes I did, but the Director Software is not listed for my HP Photosmart 8250. It is listed for a Multi Task printer that does Fax, Scan, Copy. Mine is a stand alone printer. That is why I did not download it. Also in a Chat with HP they never mentioned the Director Software for my problem.

Could you repeat exactly what your problem is?
I am not using the driver that is in VISTA out-of-the-box but:
SF_CDD_Full_Non-Network_enu.exe 1/1 (67.39M)
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex? os=2093&softwareitem=ps-48177-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=443024&lang=en
so if you are not then I'd suggest uninstalling any HP Software you have installed for the printer, deleting any printer icons in Printing & Faxing, unplugging the USB cable from the PC and rebooting.
Then still without plugging in the USB cable, install that Fully Featured software. Do not plug the USB cable to the printer in until you are told to by the installation routine or until you get to [Finish] or VISTA will fight with you to install its driver.
--------------------------------------------------------------------- Installation Instructions (on the HP website
Click the Download only button. Note: Make sure the printer is "Not" connected to the computer before running the download file.
Click the Run button to begin the download. Note: File is compressed and may take time to expand and run.
Follow the on-screen software installation instructions.
Click Finish.
Click This program installed correctly. Connect the USB cable between the printer and the computer, then turn on the printer.
You may see messaging lower right corner of the screen indicating your product is being installed.
Your product should be ready to print.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Have you checked out the Readme file that is installed? I suggest you do. There is some useful information on errors in documentation and where certain functions are actually located! I better print it out <g>
Is the PS8250 your only printer? Make sure you have a printer set as default:
----------------------------------------------------------------------- To make the HP Photosmart the default printer (Windows Vista)
On the Windows taskbar, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Printers. Right-click the HP Photosmart icon, and then click Set as default printer. Hope that helps -- please let us know how you get on. -------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have more than one printer installed make sure one of them is set as default.
The Cat's Meow - 11 Jul 2007 12:14 GMT If what you say is true, then how come it works for Mozilla Firefox? As I said before, when I bring up a web page that I want to print, I either use print preview or print. Neither works. It does not get to the print queue, it just disappears and the printer icon in taskbar shows that I executed the printer, except it has 0 documents. The icon does not include the 8250 because there is nothing in the queue.

All I can tell you is that my system does print from IE7 including using the Print Preview facility and that I have installed the HP software I referred to.
This does not include the Director Software that Cari referrs to but does install HP Product Assistant and HP Solution Center.
You might have a look at the Properties of the PS8250 under Printers / Advanced Tab and see what the settings are there for spooling even if the settings on that Tab are grayed out. I don't know why that is on my machine but one of the troubleshooting is to turn off the Spooler and see if the systeme then prints OK, even if more slowly.
The only other thing I can suggest is to reinstall the printer software invoking Run as Administrator on the file from which you install since I have adopted the habit of doing this and as I say -- the sytem works for me.
You might also have a look at this VISTA support page:

The second item tells how to change or restart the Spooler Service.
PS You aren't using VISTA 64-bit are you?
The Cat's Meow - 12 Jul 2007 14:06 GMT No I am not using 64. Thank for all your input. I will try what you said and let you know if it works. Thank you

The Cat's Meow - 12 Jul 2007 18:16 GMT Okay, I uninstalled printer and drivers. Downloaded full install from HP website. The one that includes Vista. I installed it Reconnected my usb and power when told to. Every thing installed correctly. I still can print from Mozilla Firefox. I still cannot print from Internet Explorer. I checked Properties Advanced and tried all different ways, print right away, etc. Nothing worked. I give up. I will have to use Mozilla Firefox if I need to print a web page.
The following still happens:
Here is what happens:
1. Select Print or Print Preview on File Command to print an article on a web page using Internet Explorer 7 2. Printer window pops up. 3. Select Print. 4. Printer icon appears temporarily in the Taskbar. 5. It says Open all Active Printers 6. It says Open the Printer Folder 7. It says 0 Documents 8. The 8250 does not appear because nothing went to the queue. 9. It then disappears. 10. Nothing can print because there is nothing in the queue.

How uptodate is your MSIE? MS keeps issuing bug and security fixes -- maybe one of those has gone wrong?
Internet Options / Advanced TAB has a reset button -- it won't do any harm to try that. Open HELP in MSIE and search on Repair then look at Repair Internet Explorer for some details.
Is there a newsgroup here for Interent Explorer? If so ask there.
If not check out the Compuserve Internet Explorer Forum:
http://community.compuserve.com/n/pfx/forum.aspx?webtag=ws-iesupport Good luck -- and if you solve it do let us know!
The Cat's Meow - 13 Jul 2007 13:10 GMT Internet Explorer 7, that's a laugh. I did post this problem on the Internet Explorer newsgroup, and guess what? Someone forwarded it to this newsgroup and said that's where it belongs. So much for help from them. I will let you know if it ever gets fixed. What I hate most about Microsoft is that they never back or support their products without a charge. We should all revolt. This is not what a control company should do. It is so frustrating.

From the above links, it might be a IE7 protected mode problem, as Firefox doesn't use protected mode. You might try turning it off in IE7. Tools - Internet Options - security uncheck Enable Protected Mode ok close & reopen IE7
I don't use IE7 much (prefer Firefox), but IE does print to my HP 6110 ok in protected mode.

Finally an answer.
I turned off Protected Mode and now I can print from E7.
Problem is you have to put up with the pop screen telling you that it is turned off, but I can live with that because the only time I am going to use E7 from now on, is when I have no choice, which is when I go to a website via Windows Mail. It defaults to E7. That is really the only time I would have a problem, I can leave Protected Mode off.
You are right, Firefox is the best. The best thing about Firefox, is that if the system crashes, which it does a lot, it asks if you want to return to the website you were on. It also knows that you crashed.
E7 is way behind the times. All E7 does is say there was a problem, let us check for a solution, but it never comes back with one.

Annoying -- Try the Compuserve Forum I gave you. You don't have to be a member anymore -- just log in with an AIM name and create a password or something like that.
cabillot - 07 May 2008 21:23 GMT Hello,
I also have the Vista Printing Issue from IE7. This is a fresh install and I am able to print from other applications. I have uninstalled the HP Software and ReInstalled with no change. The print Icon on taskbar flashes and after the reinstall the print job showes in the print queue. Nothing ever prints from IE7 and the print job disappears from the queue.
I Reinstalled Vista for other reasons and checked printing and it worked fine. Now all of sudden it stopped printing. I just may ReInstall Vista and monitor when the printing stops. Just wondering if any others have the same problem or some helpful suggestions before I reinstall.
Printer HP 8250 Vista Ultimate 32 Bit.

Tedg - 10 May 2008 06:53 GMT I have the same issue: Vista Business 32 and HP printer (Photosmart 2610) IE7 is only app that won't print. I can print to a PDF output from IE and it works. I reinstalled the driver. It's been working for at least 5 months. Only changes I remember off the top are: Upgraded AVG to 8 and uninstalled RingCentral.
I saw another post on a different forum that said their problem started around April 27-May2 ... same for me. It's gotta be something easy for it to work and then break.

The Cat's Meow - 11 Jul 2007 13:36 GMT I forgot to answer this in my previous reply. You asked if I could repeat exactly what my is problem is. Well here it is:
I have Vista Windows installed. Printer HP Photosmart 8250 This printer prints from all my applications, it works perfectly. This printer prints web pages when I am using Mozilla Firefox. This printer does not print web pages when I am using Internet Explorer 7.
When I use Mozilla Firefox, this does not happen. I can print any web page using this same printer.
Everyone says I should download an update for my printer. I did update the update available for this printer and it was for Vista. There are no more updates available. If I did not have the correct updates, then how come Mozilla Firefox works?
They tell me to make sure administrator is selected and that I have privileges. I checked, I do have privileges. Again, if I did not have privileges, how does Mozilla Firefox work?

RonM - 18 Jul 2007 17:52 GMT I definitly feel your pain. I have exactly the same problem with my HP DeskJet 5650 printer. I can't print in IE 7 with protected mode on. The only driver available for my printer is the one included on the Vista disk and my printer does not use the HP Director. HP customer service tells me it is an IE 7 bug, and the MS reps on this forum have been laying it on HP. Looks like us users are coming up losers.

It will then print OK. But it is a total BF I agree. I wish between them someone from MS and HP would sort out this mess - I am gonna be dumping one or the other for browsing pretty soon.
