How can I stop the "print to file" function? When I go to print, that box
comes up asking me "Output file name"? I simply wish to print. The print to
file box is NOT checked either. I may not be the sharpest knife in the
drawer, but this is making me be even more dull.

Try opening the printer properies and check on the "Ports" tabsheet which
port is assigned. It sounds like your printer might be connected to the
"FILE:" port.

Yes, my new computer had the printer connected to the "file" port. What
port should the printer be connected to? I selected the USB connection
as that is what is used with my printer. The printer turned on but I am
still not able to print to it nor can I print a test page (selecting
properties from printer control panel provides a print test page
option). Any other suggestions?

For situations like this I have always a liveCD at hand. Simply boot it
and see if your printer works there. If it does all you need are the
proper windows vista drivers. If linux won´t see the printer, it´s
probable the printer is broken.
