Hi, all.
Right now we have a HP L7650 all in one printer( this is our second printer
in a month trying to find one that works with vista, the last was certified
for vista and had the same problems. we had a G85 on xp, and it worked
excellent until we bought this vista PC. it would not print correctly and was
told we needed a vista compatable/certified printer. and now:
the problem we are having is with a new hp pc with vista ultimate factory
installed.
the printer installs with out a problem and the properties look great.
the problem is when we tell it to print  1 page the print Q shows 3/1
printing.
when we ask for 5 pages it shows 5/5 then 15/5 all the way up to 75 at last
count and as high as 176/5.
so we have to count each page that we want to print./ 25 pages we count 25
sheets out. and when we are printing 100 sheets or more it is unbearable to
count 100+ sheets.
On our First printing we asked it to print 25 sheets and walked away, it
printed the whole stack. "250 sheet capacity".   ( that is when we found out
there was a problem.) we do a lot of printing for churches  and ministries so
this is a critical issue with us.

> we had a G85 on xp,

Do you now have a new printer or is it still the G85?

Hang on for some other help since I've seen your problem referred to
with a solution but I can't remember where or what it is.

Note that HP do not have a VISTA driver for the G85 according to their
website but point you to this document:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?
docname=c00808543&lc=en&cc=us&product=60399&dlc=en&lang=en

If you need the scanning and faxing you may be well advised to buy a
new All-in-one that definitely has a full driver and software set.

Actually now we have a HP officejet Pro  L 7650 all in one  and the symptoms
we are experiencing brought us up to a level 3 hp fix from their tech
support. and did not work. they basically gave up and said it is a microsoft
spooler issue.
(which since it tallies up how many pages you requested it to print makes
sense.
"as it prints just as much paper as you have loaded in the tray. no matter
what you have told it to print."

I'll keeep looking for the message here, probably from Alan Morris,
which deals with printing multiple copies when set to one copy, which
might relate to your slightly different problem.

You could try three things:

(A) Check that the printer is marked as Default printer

(B) Look at the following in case you can see that in the Properties
setting the printer has been set in some odd way.

This is from the manual for the printer you now have:

To change default settings for all future jobs (Windows)

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers or Printers
and Faxes.
- Or -
Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Printers.

2. Right-click the printer icon, and then click Properties, Document
Defaults, or Printing Preferences.

3. Change the settings that you want, and then click OK.

(C) see if your printer has, like my HP printers (LJ and PS) a setting
to not use spool but to print directly to the printer. This should
demonstrate whether it is a MS problem or a HP problem!

Meanwhile I hope that Alan Morris who has a special link with HP will
spot your problem.

I've forwarded the information to the HP test team here.  I don't know if
they have this device since there is not an inbox driver.

What Print Process does the device use, this data is on the Advanced Tab of
printer properties.
Since you have Ultimate, launch printmanagement.msc to perform all your
administrative tasks.  Don't use the printers folder.

They ought to be able to get one from HP <gdr> But thanks for following up.

This is not my printer or problem but that of

   OneTechForGOD <arroyowolf@hotmail.com>

so hopefully he will spot your questions. Are you referring to PCL 5 or PCL6
which I see came up with the failure to print multiple copies -- the opposite
of the OP's problem!

Do you agree that bypassing Print Spooler should show whether HP was right in
blaming it on the spooler?
Alan Morris [MSFT] - 27 Mar 2008 19:38 GMT
Printing direct still uses the spooler service is some regard.  When
printing direct, we eliminate GDI and EMF (enhanced meta file) as the
problem during rendering to send Printer Description Language (PDL) data
directly to the device without first writing to the disk.

Printing direct can also circumvent some Antivirus applications that
interfere when generating driver temp files and spl files.

The Print Processor (getting it correct this time) handles page counts,
booklet, and N-UP options.  I'm curious if changing the print processor to
Winprint corrects the issue.  So if the poster returns, please change the
print proc to winprint and try the repro.

I'm not too worried about HP blaming MS.  It's the support group and they
generally still don't have a clue about the Vista driver head to toe duplex
issue on 20+ models.  The HP developer here did send the info to the deskjet
division.   I did not see any page count issues for the inbox drivers (nor
any third party drivers) in Vista RTM or Vista SP1.  So far this is the sole
report.

Windows GDI
Print Processor
The spooler monitors the current print jobs and the target printer to
determine an appropriate time to print a job. Once the spooler determines
that a job should be printed, it calls the print processor. The print
processor is a DLL that reads EMF records and uses the graphics engine to
convert them into DDI calls.

HP has not seen the endless print job.  They are aware of the page count
issue.  What application is their question.

Subject: RE: Vista Ultimate print spooler printing too many pages. counts by

Here's what I know:

This seems like two issues are being lumped together as one: inaccurate
spooler page count and print job being multiplied unexpectedly.

I've never seen the driver multiplying the actual printouts. It would be
interesting to see what app they use. But the spooler page count has been an
issue for a long time. I believe all Mombi drivers with preanalysis has the
same issue of displaying more pages than it's printing. ... has been looking
into a fix but it is not possible to fix without a major change in the
architecture.

I really appreciate the information in your two messages. I hope the OP
comes back into this thread but he has started another on and I'll
check that and chastise him appropriately <g>

I wish I understood as much as you do about the innard workings of
these things but I appreciate the information and have flagged and
printed the information.

In case it helps you find the other post he made here is part of your
post in it. Unfortunately using an OLR I can't give you a link that
will work for you.

try one of the HP OfficeJet drivers that is included in Vista.  If you
can
print a legible test page attempt the multiple page document printing
using
this driver.

Run Add Printer , Local Printer, Select the same port as the other
device,
compatible driver, ...  Finish
