How do I install a scanner driver for a printer?

Hi Everyone,

I've got an HP Laserjet 1220 with the scanner attachment.  It installs fine
in Vista Enterprise RTM as a printer, but not as a scanner.

However, I noticed that there is also a Vista scanner driver for the 1220
that includes both the printer and scanner drivers for the 1220.

Is there any way that I can force the printer to use the scanner version of
the Vista driver when the driver wizard will only let me install a printer
driver for this device?

In other words, how can I reach the generic driver wizard that allows me to
select the device type so that I can tell vista that this is a scanner
instead of a printer?

Thanks for your help.

If you can say where (or how) you see a "Vista scanner driver for th 1220",
I (or someone else) may be able figure out how to "install" it.

I don't have an HP LaserJet1220, so I couldn't tell whether it works or not.

It is perfectly useless to know the right answer to the wrong question.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have another scanner attached to the same computer - a Canon Canoscan
4200F.  There are no drivers available for this device yet, so it shows up in
the device manager under an "Other devices" category.

The following steps allow me to install the "Laserjet 1220 Scanner" driver
for the Canon:

1.  Select "Update Driver Software" for the Canon scanner
2.  Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
3.  Select "Let my pick from a list of device drivers..."
4.  Select "Imaging Devices" from the "Device Type" menu.
5.  Select "Hewlett Packard" from the "Manufacturer" list.
6.  Select "HP Laserjet 1220 Scanner" from the "Model" list.
7.  Select "Next" - then press "Yes" in the "Update Driver Warning" popup
window
8.  The HP Laserjet 1220 Scanner drivers are then installed for the Canon -
of course, they don't work for the Canon...

The "Driver File Details" window for the Canon scanner now includes the
following driver files:

C:\Windows\System32\Dot4Prt.sys
C:\Windows\System32\Dot4.sys
C:\Windows\System32\Dot4Scan.sys
C:\Windows\System32\ksthunk.sys
C:\Windows\System32\hpljbfig.sys

Any help or ideas on this issue are much appreciated.

Regards,
Mark

I have an aging Canon Lide 30, and the XP drivers and Canon Toolbox work in
Vista.. have you tried installing from your original Canon CD?

Hi Mike,

Thanks.  However, I'm not really worried about getting the Canon scanner
working.  I'm more interested in a way to force Vista to use the "HP Laserjet
1220 Scanner" drivers for my HP (all-in-one Printer/Scanner).  I just used
the Canon as a convenient way to show that the Laserjet Scanner drivers
actually exist in Vista since Vista only wants to install the printer only
drivers for that device.

Mark

Hi Mark, Have you tried using the scanner in Windows Photo Gallery? Click
File/Import from scanner or camera.
If this works your in box drivers are installed and working. I had the same
problem with my Canon MP 500.

Hi Jerry,

I'm not trying to get the Canon scanner working.  I'm trying to install the
"HP Laserjet 1220 Scanner" drivers.  These drivers exist in Vista for
scanners, but Vista wants to install only the printer drivers for the
Laserjet 1220.  The 1220 is both a scanner and a printer, but Vista refuses
to see the scanner side of the 1220.

Mark

Yes Mark I fully understand your question. If the scanner works in windows
photo gallery, then the inbox drivers are ok, you need to wait for scanner
driver updates from HP !!!!   Its the same problem I had with my Cannon.
Good luck, HP is one of the slowest ones to update drivers.

were not originally compatible.. www.canon.com will get you there..
