Vista / IE7 Unable to print

I am running vista Business and am unable to print from any web page using
IE7.  The problem does not exist in Firefox or with any other application -
Office 2007, Acrobat, etc.

I am told that turning off 'protected mode' would solve the problem.

Is there any fix that is a little less dangerous and time consuming?

I have uninstalled and reinstalled printer [wireless] with fresh drivers.

Printer is physically connected to a XP Home machine but attaching it to one
of the Vista computers makes no difference.

Many thanks for any help

The printer is an HP PSC 1510 [all in one] and I don't expect to be able to
do anything but print from a remote computer.

Although something of an amateur - as the printer prints without problem
from Firefox, Office 2007, Adobe, etc - surely this has to be a problem with
IE7 and/or Internet Protected Mode?

Christopher,

Are you by any chance running AVG 8.x Free?  If so uninstall this program
and go back to the older version (AVG 7.x Free).  I had the exact same
problem you described and I finally traced it down to my installation of AVG
8.x Free a few days earlier.  Apparently, from my testing, AVG 8.x Free is
interacting oddly with IE7 Protected Mode and this is preventing IE7 from
printing to a local physical printer.  If you try printing to say a PDF
writer (PrimoPDF, Acrobat Full, etc.) I found I could so without issue and
then as you found print from the associated program with no issue.  Only from
within IE7 was I unable to print.  Once I uninstalled AVG 8.x Free and went
back to the older version AVG 7.x Free I could print again from within IE7
without issue.  Some have suggested that installation of KB929547  may help
resolve this problem, but for my money I just removed AVG Free 8.x untill
Grisoft resolves their programming issue.

Brian - I posted this in a different group

"" Yes, I did have AVG 8 Free on my PC.  I also called Microsoft Tech
Support
and when the 'Prefetch' was emptied, the problem went away temporarily!   I
then upgraded to AVG 8 - 3 computer license for home use and reported the
fault to them.  I am awaiting their response and shall advise.""

Christopher,

Great!  Glad to hear you found a solution.  I've contacted a friend with
Microsoft and asked him to get this information into the tech support
pipeline (perhaps a KB article) so folks will know how to resolve it.  Sadly,
from what I can tell there just isn't a good way for AVG Free users to
directly provide feedback to Grisoft except through the forums and that just
isn't a tenable solution for this type of programatic issue.

I have Vista Ultimate SP1 installed.  I installed AVG Free 8.0, but I
unselected the *Security Toolbar* during the installation.

I had no problem printing a web page in IE 7.

Has anyone else tried AVG 8.0 without installing the Security Toolbar
to confirm that the printing problem is there.

I suppose you could also try disabling the Security Toolbar in IE 7 if
it is already installed.

Turning off UAC seems to be all that works at this point.
