HP does not provide a driver for the Scanjet 5550c.

Here the Scanjet 5550c seems to work fine with the 5590 driver on Vista32.
Does this work for anyone else, too?

On 32 bit, I used the cd that came with my scanner. On 64 bit I used HP XP
64bit driver.
(5550c)
BUT you are right HP is lagging at providing ANY Vista drivers.

I just went to the HP site (as I have since December) and read what you
probably read. THEY WILL NOT PROVIDE VISTA DRIVERS>. My scanner is working
fine in Vista BUT I think it is APPALLING for HP to screw over customers
like this.

Tony,

I am being forced to buy another scanner too.  I paid over $450.00 for my
5370C and now I see this today.

"We are sorry to inform you that there will be no Windows Vista printer
driver available for your HP product. Therefore your product will not work
with Windows Vista.
If you are using the Windows Vista operating system on your computer, please
consider upgrading to a newer HP product that is supported on Windows Vista."

If HP thinks I will buy another one of their products they are BRAIN DEAD.
I will keep XP on another box and use this scanner there.  I will also try to
edit the 5550 INF file to see if that will work.

Good to know -- did VISTA pick that driver and install it or did you
have to go out and get it?

Any features missing?

PS I'm running my HP SJ5P scsi connected oldie under VISTA RTM using
Deskscan 2.9 software. Scanning and copying utilities work fine.

VISTA install picked it and the Adaptec 19160 scsi controller card fine
and they both appeared in Device manager without any flags but would
not actually scan until I installed that old software -- which is what
I had to do under W2K and XP ....

All these people complaining should just see what happens and what
alternatives work. Even HP sometiems suggest using a driver for another
device.

You have to install the basic driver of Scanjet 5590 and update the driver
of the 5550c manually. Of course you have to deselect "Show only campatible
drivers".

I am using Windows Fax and Scan. With this software the scanner just works
fine.
Suddenly it supports duplex scanning. This works not perfectly but it works.
Did I miss this before?

HP says now: "Currently, there is no Windows Vista driver available for your
HP product. Therefore your product will not work with Windows Vista at this
time.
HP is currently working to make the HP driver solution for your product
available as soon as possible. We will have basic driver solutions available
for HP Scanners starting in February and completing by mid March."

In article <eHPTmONRHHA.4188@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl>, Romer quoted me:

> Even HP sometimes suggests using a driver for another device.

That was a general comment, not VISTA restricted, based on my
experience supporting hardware on Compuserve.
