My security center shows me that i dont have an installed anti-virus... it shows shows windows defender as an anti-spyware.. My info: Windows Vista Ultimate - Desktop PC Intel Core2Duo 1GB Memory 256 Graphics Card 100GB C Drive (Windows Drive) What anti-virus you recommend me to use ? (not AVG or Norton coz i hate them !!!!) I have three different computers running Windows OneCare. In over 2 years, no system has been infected with malware, spyware or viruses. I highly recommend using it. I highly recommend using it. Same here but I use Avira AntiVir® Personal. Is it really WOC which keeps malware out of your system or just plain safe surfing habits coupled with practicing Safe-Hex, I wonder? My two pennies worth: If you detest Norton like me, you should take a look at a low-footprint program like Eset's NOD32. It is a combined malware solution with very good test results, it is not intrusive, but some feel it is a wee bit complicated to customize. Eset also makes a suite called Smart Security. It includes anti-spam and a firewall, but imo. most home users need no third party FW and filters. Another popular free program is Avast! It will protect you well, but you may want to consider adding a second spyware scanner like Spybot or Superantispyware. NOD32 has been on my system for over a year now and I'm very impressed with it. I find it easy to configure and very light on system resources. I'll start by saying that I don't think any security "suite" is a good choice. It'd be better to use smaller, less-resource-draining stand-alone products. I had used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then Norton Internet Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP, all without any significant problems. I had used McAfee prior to that. But it's been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee products. Their quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they were acquired by Network Associates. However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton Internet Security came up for renewal (at a cost substantially higher than the preceding year's subscription), I decided to try less expensive solutions. I downloaded and installed the free version of GriSoft's AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ). It proved to be easily installed, easy to use, and quite effective. Additionally, I was pleasantly surprised to see a small but very noticeable improvement in my PC's performance, once I'd replaced the Symantec product. Another free (for personal use) anti-virus product is AVAST! 4 Home Edition (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html), which is what I'd been using without problems on Vista Business, until recently. I'm currently testing ESET's NOD32, which isn't free, but has a small footprint that doesn't bog the system down. It also comes in 32bit and 64bit flavours. You might not have any reason to hate Alwil's Anti-vir or the Avast! program from [I forget the name :o) ] yet - so maybe try them. SignatureRegards, Hank Arnold Microsoft MVP Windows Server - Directory Services I am a very technical user and spent weeks trying to determine the causes of BSOD(s) that would appear erratically on startup/shutdown. It apparently was related to a corrupted Kaspersky 7.0 install. Part of the corruption took place during a Vista Home Premium to Ultimate upgrade- however, the install may have been corrupted before the upgrade- since there were similar though more sporadic issues prior to the upgrade. I then uninstalled Kaspersky and began using BitDefender Antivirus 2008. However, there was an issue with the software, that while it did not compromise security was annoying and not insignificant. Their tech support was unresponsive- causing me to drop them. The uninstall process required using their separate uninstall utility in addition to the standard Windows uninstall feature. Yesterday evening I installed Eset NOD 32 antivirus. The system appears to be functioning normally. The software seems lean and effective. Reviewers in PC World, PC Magazine, CNET, etc. sometimes fail to sufficiently take the user experience into account. Kaspersky is an excellent protector- however- it may be prone to corruption and software conflicts. BitDefender antivirus is fast and offers good protection- but may have compatibility issues with Windows Vista and customer support challenges. I would recommend that users read the major publication reviews and then read the reports produced by independent organizations such as Checkvir, VB100, West Coast Labs, etc. They should pay attention to end user reviews, recognizing their limitations, but factoring in their significance in conjunction with the independent reviews. >> My security center shows me that i dont have an installed anti-virus... >> it shows shows windows defender as an anti-spyware..
