I purchase Home Premium, decided to upgrade to Ultimate, followed all the
steps and bought the update and the Windows Anytime Upgrade disc.  However,
everytime I try to do the upgrade it gets all the way to the end, and then
supposedly errors, because I don't notice anything wrong, but the
install/upgrade promptly reverts itself and restores the previous version.

How do I get Vista Ultimate installed?!

The details I do get, are...

Installation was not successful.
Changes made during the installation process are being undone.

you might try disabling/turning off in the bios any devices not needed for the install.
like extra disks, serial/parallel ports, usb ports.
and NO over clocking.
