I have also had this problem and with no advanced tab in the Set
Associations section of the Control Panel, I still have exe's associated with
random programs.

Call me crazy but as i am looking thru the newsgroup here this is the 6th
thread about this same issue.  The fact being that the file association for
all EXE file types has been changed.

Known.
I was installing Adobe 6.0
2 people upgrading to Windows Media Player something.
Another guy installing Adobe 6.0.
And another guy with an association problem so bad that the system will not
even get thru boot.

Anyone that can shed some light on the topic BESIDES SYSTEM RESTORE(which is
impossible if all your exe's are no longer associated with basic.)  then lets
hear it.

Hello,

I seem to be having the same problem as many of us are. All my files
only open with VLC media player. The first time this was not a problem,
and I uninstalled it and everything went back to normal. I reinstalled
it from a different source, thinking it was a virus or something, but
the problem restarted, and everything still opened with VLC. I tryed to
uninstall it, it worked, but all my programs became blank notes, or
simply do not open. When i click on them, it asks me what program I want
to associate it with. I can't do anything, run setups at all. I can't
even run a script or reg editor. Help me out please!

Try this to restore your exe file association. Copy and paste this into a blank text file.
Save the text file and change the extension from TXT to REG , right-click and select ' Merge'.
