I am trying to watch an avi file with media player 11.  The thing is now the
video plays and the sound is off by a few seconds and the video stutters
sometimes.  I know it is not just this file as I have tried it with several
other avi files.  Are there any drivers or codecs I can install to improve
performance?  I am running a GHz 1gb 256mb ATI card setup.

WMP11 is a rather heavyweight program, requiring many resources.
Try downloading the freeware (and lightweight) "Media Player Classic" from
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm
I use it instead of WMP11 because it is faster and I don't need all the
fancy stuff in WMP11.
Works on Windows XP (x86 and x64) and Vista (x86 and x64).

Does anyone have an actual cure for this apart from downloading
"another" piece of software?

If i had a 10er for every time someone says "download MP Classic" i
could build a farm of servers.

Is it the way MP11 decodes the video file or is it codec related?

Im running Vista Ultimate, Nvidia 8800GTX 768MBSLI, 4Gig ram and 2
500gig SATA discs (defragged) so i know its not down to resources
running out.

Click on setings at the top of the page, click tool then options. click
on performance. uncheck video smoothing and uncheck turn on DirectX
video acceleration for wmv files. Hope this helps.

tried that method and it actually makes the problem a lot worse. Ive
redownloaded the file and it does exactly the same.

I think the problem is just badly written software.

TY for the help. And i hope Microsoft start to employ decent coders.

What codecs does the file use?  Who are they written by?

Speaking for myself only.
See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
