Wondering if anyone knows how to change Monitor Identities?  That is, change
the monitor Windows picks as Monitor 2 to Monitor 1.

just switch the cables in the back
of the pc!

you can change the positions on the display properties windows by dragging
the monitor icons, but that will not change the numbers... switch the cables
in the back
of the pc.

My Nvidia Control Panel lets me select which monitor I want as primary.

You can't change primary and secondary monitors unless your display adapter
drivers let you ... but you can go into display properties and drag monitor
#1 onto the other side of monitor #2 and reverse which one is on the right
and which one is on the left with any dual-display card.

UltraMon lets you do this on the fly, from the system tray.  It also gives
you other very useful things like a Taskbar on the second monitor.  The
current v3 beta seems to run indefinitely.

I just plugged my hp pavilion dv9000 into its expansion base, and the
machine decided that the external was monitor 1 and the laptop was
monitor 2! Anyone know how I can get this back to normal? If it means
anything, I'm using an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS.

In display settings, can you specify which monitor is #1?

No, unfortunately.

I gave in and just changed which was the primary and adjusted the
resolutions and the positions so everything looks right and behaves
well. The compulsive part of me is still kind of bothered that when I
identify monitors, the laptop is number 2, and the external is number
1... Oh well.

I have an identical setup and have the same problem.  It annoys me
because most of the time when I dock the laptop Vista decides the
external monitor is my primary and moves my taskbar & sidebar and I have
to move everything back.

I would think there is a buried registry key that defines monitor
identities.

I think I found the solution.

In the NVIDIA control panel go to "Set Up Multiple Displays".  Option 2
is "Select the displays you would like to use."  Mine was set at "HP
w1907 (my ext mon) + Laptop Display".  I used to drop-down menu to make
it "Laptop Display + HP w1907" and the monitor identies changed so my
laptop is #1.

Apparently whichever monitor is listed first becomes #1.
