Is there any way to add other programs to autoplay in vista? 'Cos I don't
like to use the defaults.

Yeah you said "Is there any way to add other programs to autoplay in
vista? 'Cos I don't like to use the defaults."

What does the Cosine (Cos) have to do with your problem?

I meant for example that if I put a dvd in to the drive, it opens in
vlc(videolan).  As you can only chose from the default opetions: play with
media player , open folder  to view files using windows explorer,  take no
action etc. I'd like to set up 3rd party programs for autoplay. So what I
originally asked was that can you add other than windows programs to
autoplay. Thanks for trying to help though =). My first post was a bit not
informative enough. =)
zachd [MSFT] - 26 Jan 2008 00:39 GMT
It's the responsibility of the application vendor to add themselves to
AutoPlay.  It's actually really easy to do this.  Does VLC not do this?  You
should politely request they add this support.  Please do that on their
forums.  If they mention having problems with implementation (they
shouldn't), lemme know (respond back to this post) and I'll check out their
questions there.  =)

Yeah I could do that, but its too much work to do that for every 3rd party
program I want to use with autoplay. Would be so much easier if autoplay just
had an option "add other programs to autoplay" or something like that. Thanks
for the help though.

Are you expecting to need for a large number of 3rd party applications to
add themselves to AutoPlay on your system?  What vendors/applications are
failing to do this?

I'd also like to know how to add handlers to Vista's Autoplay dialog
box. With Windows XP TweakUI allowed you to do this, along with a few
other programs. Is there anyway to do this in Vista?

What are you trying to do?  The appropriate thing to do is to have the
vendor take the simple steps to add this registration.  This actually is
really easy for them to do.  You hacking the system is much less effective
for the world community than your vendor actually supporting this the right
way.  =)

So: what exactly are you trying to do here?

I am trying to add handlers to the AutoPlay box in Vista. In Windows XP
I was able to do this easily with the TweakUI PowerToy provided by
Microsoft.

That would be better...except that not everything is that simple. I can
(or should be able to) do it immediately by myself, rather than wait
months/years for the vendor to add the ability. Also, how does that work
with software whose vendor no longer exists? Or software that has been
discontinued? Or older versions of new software that are no longer
supported?

I should clarify: what application are you trying to extend in this fashion?

OK, but getting the vendor on the right path at least would begin the
countdown to goodness, as opposed to hoping that it magically happens on
some particularly sunny day.  We're on the same page, I'm just interested in
best practices here.  =)

Yes, I agree that applications that never had this functionality added would
be a headache to deal with.  That would be why it is important to understand
what you are trying to do with what application so that vendor does not
orphan the desires of all future users.

If your sole interest is in hacking AutoPlay, some quick Internet searches
should answer your questions.  It's really not difficult, but then again I
do this sort of thing by hand in the registry all the time.

Since I *do* do this by hand, my advice to you here would have to be based
upon knowing what application you're trying to do what with.  Failing that,
you would need to search for "how to create/register AutoPlay handlers" -
look up how to create Handlers and EventHandlers.  It's pretty easy, but I
apologize that I'm unable to help you without knowing the specifics of what
you're referring to.

There are a number of programs - some examples would be:
Blank CD - CDBurnerXP Pro
Blank DVD - SONIC, CDBurnerXP Pro
DVD - DVD Shrink

I agree that at some point the vendor should solve the problem, but I
-should- be able to do it much faster by myself. Along with the time
issue, I may have specific desires when it comes to Autoplay handlers
that very few others would have - I don't think it is proper for the
vendor add a handler to every user's computer just because I'll use it.

If it's the only way I am willing to "hack" the Autoplay handlers in
the registry. Microsoft provided a tool (GUI and all) to change the
Autoplay handlers in XP - hardly "hacking." I am looking for a similar
utility for/in Vista.

I'm not aware of any PowerToys in this arena, so that seems a dead end of
investigation at this time.  Perhaps there is a third party tool that does
this. Failing that, you could either do this yourself via the registry or
request the application vendor to support that.

I’ve been wanting to have a way to edit and add Autoplay handlers in
Vista for a while now. 'This post on Lifehacker'
finally convinced me to figure it out!

A gave a post/comment by 'n8barber '
(http://www.codejacked.com/a-tweakui-for-vista/)a try. I downloaded
'TweakUI'
9/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
)
for Windows XP and opened the exe with '7-Zip'
(http://www.vistax64.com/www.7-zip.org/). I extracted TweakUI.exe, set
the compatibility mode to Windows XP SP2, and ran the file as an
Administrator.

Sure enough, TweakUI opened (after prompting me that it might not) and
I was able to add Autoplay handlers! You can work with Autoplay handlers
in Tweak UI by going to My Computer > Autoplay > Handlers.

I think Galad's question is quite straight forward fellas and I
understand where he's coming from.

He doesn't need to have his question answered with another question, he
just wants a solution.

So let me ask the question on Galad's behalf aswell because I'd be
interested also.

Is there an option within Vista that allows you to customise/add third
party media software applications or other devices to Auto Play so they
become the default application YOU want instead of what VISTA wants?
Please advise.

Kind regards

Neil

Thanks Arcking

I followed your instructions, but it doesn't appear to work on Vista
x64 or at least it didn't for me anyway.

What about the other Tweak product for Vista?

You might give a 64-bit version of TweakUI a try. I found a version
(untested by myself, but seems good) here:
'Download TweakUI 64-Bit Edition 2.2 - NeoSmart Technologies'

If that doesn't work, try modifying the file here for your specific
program:
'DVD Shrink .info: DVD Shrink goodies / DVD Shrink \"autoplay\"'

I've read every posting on this issue and I'm still not getting a clear and
specific response -- probably because the posters are using different
versions of English.

I am running Vista 32 on a quad-core machine. I have a burning application
that's both Vista-based and quad-core enabled that I prefer to use. Autoplay
recognized it as a choice for burning "blank CD" but it does not appear as an
option for "blank DVD".

I've contacted the application developer and they have received no other
reports of this issue.

Is there any other reason that would keep Autoplay from identifying this
application? Is there any way in which I can adjust Autoplay to do this?

There are two things in Windows that often get confused with each
other. One called autoplay, the other auto run.

This should explain how to setup/change the former in Vista:

My Control Panel does NOT have an icon named "Hardware and Sound" but it DOES
have one named "Autoplay." I do not understand how your reply in any way
responds to my posting.

Does your burning application have a "control panel" where one can
choose from all the tasks available?  I use Nero and it's called "Nero
StartSmart" in that suite.

If so, can you configure autoplay to always open that application when
a blank DVD is inserted?

You DO know where it is that you set those preferences, right?

Yes, I do know how to set preferences -- but that specific preference is NOT
available to me through the application. This is why I made my initial
posting: Vista autoplay lists only certain applications from which one can
choose and I'd like to add THIS application to that list.

This was very easy to do in XP -- but I cannot find a way to do it in Vista.
THAT is the information I require.

I have looked at my Vista box and have 2 burning programs installed.
ImgBurn and Ashampoo Burning Studio 7.
I get similar results to you in that ImgBurn is listed  for blank CDs and DVDs
but Ashampoo is only listed for blank CDs.
In the settings tab of ImgBurn the is a load of boxes to tick regarding Autoplay.
In Ashampoo there is no specific setting for Autoplay.
I've had a quick look in the registry and I think it's down to the burning program to write
the relevant keys to make the entry show up in both of the lists.

I'll have a poke about and see if I can get the lists to match.

You might try this, but AT YOUR OWN RISK (backup the registry).

- Open RegEdit
- Navigate to
 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\AutoplayHandlers\Handlers
- Find the entry for your burning program - for example
 "iTunesBurnCDOnArrival"
- Navigate to
 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\AutoplayHandlers\EventHandlers\HandleDVDBurningOnArrival
- Create a new string with the entry for your burning program

That should work

That's the way to do it!
There is an entry in the key for CDs , ( HandleCDBurningOnArrival ), I just copied the string value
for my application into HandleDVDBurningOnArrival and it now shows up in both lists.

Thanks for that info.
