I am trying to add handlers to the AutoPlay box in Vista. In Windows XP
I was able to do this easily with the TweakUI PowerToy provided by
Microsoft.

That would be better...except that not everything is that simple. I can
(or should be able to) do it immediately by myself, rather than wait
months/years for the vendor to add the ability. Also, how does that work
with software whose vendor no longer exists? Or software that has been
discontinued? Or older versions of new software that are no longer
supported?

I should clarify: what application are you trying to extend in this fashion?

OK, but getting the vendor on the right path at least would begin the
countdown to goodness, as opposed to hoping that it magically happens on
some particularly sunny day. We're on the same page, I'm just interested in
best practices here. =)

Yes, I agree that applications that never had this functionality added would
be a headache to deal with. That would be why it is important to understand
what you are trying to do with what application so that vendor does not
orphan the desires of all future users.
If your sole interest is in hacking AutoPlay, some quick Internet searches
should answer your questions. It's really not difficult, but then again I
do this sort of thing by hand in the registry all the time.
Since I *do* do this by hand, my advice to you here would have to be based
upon knowing what application you're trying to do what with. Failing that,
you would need to search for "how to create/register AutoPlay handlers" -
look up how to create Handlers and EventHandlers. It's pretty easy, but I
apologize that I'm unable to help you without knowing the specifics of what
you're referring to.

-Zach

There are a number of programs - some examples would be:
Blank CD - CDBurnerXP Pro
Blank DVD - SONIC, CDBurnerXP Pro
DVD - DVD Shrink

I agree that at some point the vendor should solve the problem, but I
-should- be able to do it much faster by myself. Along with the time
issue, I may have specific desires when it comes to Autoplay handlers
that very few others would have - I don't think it is proper for the
vendor add a handler to every user's computer just because I'll use it.

If it's the only way I am willing to "hack" the Autoplay handlers in
the registry. Microsoft provided a tool (GUI and all) to change the
Autoplay handlers in XP - hardly "hacking." I am looking for a similar
utility for/in Vista.

I'm not aware of any PowerToys in this arena, so that seems a dead end of
investigation at this time. Perhaps there is a third party tool that does
this. Failing that, you could either do this yourself via the registry or
request the application vendor to support that.

I’ve been wanting to have a way to edit and add Autoplay handlers in
Vista for a while now. 'This post on Lifehacker'
finally convinced me to figure it out!
A gave a post/comment by 'n8barber '
(http://www.codejacked.com/a-tweakui-for-vista/)a try. I downloaded
'TweakUI'
9/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe)
for Windows XP and opened the exe with '7-Zip'
(http://www.vistax64.com/www.7-zip.org/). I extracted TweakUI.exe, set
the compatibility mode to Windows XP SP2, and ran the file as an
Administrator.
Sure enough, TweakUI opened (after prompting me that it might not) and
I was able to add Autoplay handlers! You can work with Autoplay handlers
in Tweak UI by going to My Computer > Autoplay > Handlers.
