When I open up multiple programs on my computer, the buttons on my taskbar
are no more than 2 cm in width.  Is there a way to restore the width of the
buttons?

I am running windows vista

I already knew that. I am a Star Trek Fan of the entire ST universe.
Each one got better as technology advanced.
Odd thing is: Look at Star Trek Enterprise.
The technology in most areas were advanced except instead of being called
phasers, the weapons were called laser pistols,
the communicators were the same as in TOS and the first 6 movies (What Rick
Berman was telling us that as we advanced in tech,
the basics are still with us. If you think about it, so did Back to the
future.
Think about this. Someone created the wheel that led to the Space Shuttle
and the International Space Station.
Look at the news some time. CNN in particular. Among all the advances, there
is wars and pestilence.
Even in this news group, there is no peace. Tech has brought us many things.
The internet is one of them, as well as Usenet. We are one huge family that
is killing each other
over boarder disputes, oil, religion, (Alias never said he was atheist. He
is perhaps a Scientologist. They are everywhere included Spain and Germany.)
I am not sure what Gene would say about Vista. But Tom Brokaw uses PCs. He
spoke a keynote a few weeks back.
Some hate Vista. Some love it. I am here to seek out help and understand why
Vista fails for other users.
The OS I paid for and got were different. As soon as I could, I asked my
parents to buy me Windows Vista Home Premium. I am getting Ultimate soon.
I used my Windows Live ID to sign into Microsoft's OEM partner program and
set myself up.
I have been a  licensed user since the Vic 20. 1983. It was a home computer.
Because of the keyboard, and it looked like a type writer,
I wanted it as a cheap word processer. After reading the manual, I was
hooked on computer programming. I paid for the machine with my High School
graduation money, and bought some Star Trek books I had not read. This was
1983. I did not go into programming professionally, but in 1984, I graduated
from at Trenholm State Technical College. Alias, I am correcting my spelling
with Windows Live Mail spelling checker. I am 43 years old going on 44 in
November. I was not born in Alabama. I come from a Military family. We have
been half way around the world and back.
My father is a Defense contractor. He is doing the same job that he did in
the Military. From what I understand, the Armed Forces use Unix on their
mainframes. And they are NOT online. Resistance is Futile, say the Borg.
Well, the Borg are half machine, half man through artificial limbs.
One mind controlling everything. Star Trek First Contact showed who is
controlling the Borg. The Borg Queen. In STTNG, she wanted Picard. In STFC,
she realized she needed Data.
Who is the master controlling the Internet? No one. It is for meetings of
scientists, the military, the Police, the governments, businesses, and
thanks to ISPs, the average user. It use the average user using Vista,
Linux, and Mac OSX. I have used every computer out there (even a Mac, though
it was one of the first ones donated to the program I was in) And I can tell
you one thing. All OSes are the same. Before Windows and Mac OSx and Lisa
and the original computer that used a GUI at Xerox, it was all text based.
Before Bell, the main frame had no OS. It was said once that Unix was
created as a joke. The computer was and is a database. We have achieved the
goal at modernizing the world with technology. Charles Babbage's computer
had no electricity. And Ada Lovelace was the first computer programmer.
Programmer. A woman.
Not a man. A woman. Computers were made for women, not men. So why am I
here. Because I exist outside the box and am helping Microsoft debug the
main things I use from them. Internet Explorer 8, Windows Vista all of it.
Instead of bickering and complaining and bashing, help Microsoft out by
telling them through Vista. Every time I have a crash, the report is sent to
MS with the debug info. No biggie. I am the master of my own computer, not
the network.
Every one your problems can be solved if you report it. If you have Vista,
it is automatically done for you.
Simple. Xp worked differently. From what I could tell about Debian and
Linux, the only way is a forum or mailing list.
Microsoft already corrected the problem with "www.microsoft.com  takes two
times to load". I reported last night and they fixed it already. Firefox is
OK, but it is a Unix/linux browser. It just so happens to work on Windows
because of a little gimmick called "cross platform")
Do you realize that most of your computer programs, the GUI, are really text
based? Unix started that. Windows 1.00, introduced in 1983, revolutionized
the way we look at desktops look today. Microsoft and Apple both had access
the same source code. PC DOS (microsoft did not exist as a company yet) came
out in 1981. Before that, CP/M was on business machines. Now who want to
learn proper netiquette and know why you should stick to a particular
newsgroup of your own expertise and why flame wars are a sign of immaturity.
And the golden rule of "Take some good advice. If you have nothing good to
say, say nothing" Take it from me, what goes around, comes around. Be
careful what you say and do. It will haunt you for the rest of your life.
Even in death, we are judged by our Maker. Do you you know who God really
is? Your parents. Santa Claus is your parents. So is the easter bunny and
the tooth fairy. Time travel is a gimmick to sell a story. HG Well did not
create it. SF has been around for a long time. What do you think about the
ancient gods like Apollo and Zeus? There is an Apollo in Battlestar
Galactica. So what? The teens at the ranch I used to work at name one of the
colts after the God Of War and Love. Roman and Greek mythology are
intertwined. The Roman Empire lasted 1,000 years before Jesus Christ, and
1,000 years after. The Holy Roman Empire lasted 300. Civilization began in
the mideast, before there were the nations we know today. The US did not
even exist in it current form until 600 years ago. All you doubters, take a
history lesson and STFU.

adult, two things you are incapable of being.

What world are you living in?
Reagan's Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 was the latest (and
arguably the most comprehensive) reform of the US immigration laws since
1952.

The laws have been in place. Illegal immigrants are illegal BECAUSE the
laws have been in place.

Execution of the laws is is different matter...

I am living in Millbrook, Alabama. At Robinson Springs Elementary School,
there are children of illegal immigrants. In Arizona, our friend's son's
wife is Mexican. Her parents are here illegally. Need I go on? Once they are
here, they let their papers lapse. Can't go home.
They cross the borders from Canada or Mexico.
Look at CNN. I mean the Cable TV station, not the website. Or any of the
news channels

Re-read the thread. There is no doubt that there is a giant problem with
illegal immigration. I never questioned that. I merely responded to your
nonsense statement that no immigration laws existed in 1991.

I live in Arizona and my S-I-L's father is an ICE agent on the border
at Why, AZ.  They see dozens of probable illegals every day but can't
do much about it because they get shot at and are not allowed to
return fire, even to protect themselves.  We have thousands getting
across every day and the Feds are doing NOTHING.  The supposed fence
was halted for unknown reasons.  Partially our uberlib governor.

I am not sure what the statement "Once they are here, they let their
papers lapse. Can't go home.

Hi J Dub,

This is normal. It's squeezes them together to make room for them on
the taskbar. The only way to restore the size is to close enough windows
until they are larger again. In the taskbar properties, you can check
"Group similar taskbar buttons" to help condense the multiple buttons
from the same program.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

you must make sure you have unlocked the taskbar by right clicking on the
taskbar and seeing that the LOCK TASKBAR entry is unchecked, then you will
notice that some
vertical "sizing handles"  appear for the toolbars, one such toolbar you
probably have is called quicklaunch.
http://www.coolnerds.com/XP/Taskbar/xpTaskbar05.gif

Grab the "sizing handles" and slide it so you make more space for the
taskbar button area. See this page for more info
(this is for xp but the same ol thing applies to vista)

One solution would be to increase the height of you task bar.  Unlock it and
grab an edge until you get double arrows and pull it up until the buttons
get to the size you want.  Then you can set it to auto hide and it will be
out of sight unless you move your cursor to the edge and restore it.  Then
lock the task bar again.

Try turning off the quick launch toolbar, and turning it back on if you want
it. I did that and it fixed that problem.
