David - 21 Mar 2008 20:19 GMT I can't run WMP11 more than a few moments before it crashes. Didn't have this much trouble with it, pre SP1. Thanks AGAIN, MicroSux!!!
Kerry Brown - 21 Mar 2008 20:25 GMT Perhaps you could post the details of the crash from the event logs and someone may be able to help you fix the problem.

It took a mere 10 seconds for it to crash.

zachd [MSFT] - 21 Mar 2008 21:59 GMT Do you happen to have the Slacker Player on your system? I understand that can potentially cause this sort of problem.

If you do have a DMP file for this crash, though, I would enjoy looking at it - if you could put that DMP file (found via the Problem Reports and Solutions Center control panel) up on a site such as yousendit or megaupload or any other place I can get at it, that would be great.

zachd [MSFT] - 29 Mar 2008 01:19 GMT Any updates on this? I suspect that there's a piece of code in Windows which doesn't adequately guard against the corrupt data that Slacker is supplying, and I'd love to help get that fixed. This would still fail - looks like a bug in Slacker - but it should be possible to simply make WMP fail to play the file as opposed to crash after Slacker gives WMP bogus data. =)

does that help?

zachd [MSFT] - 29 Mar 2008 03:11 GMT Right, that's the same data as you posted before, actually - it's very helpful. At this point it would be most helpful to get the DMP crash file produced when you actually hit this crash. This should be a 8-30MB file that is created when you crashed. =\

zachd [MSFT] - 29 Mar 2008 03:12 GMT Right, it would seemingly crash there after Slacker's AAC codec corrupts memory. Once that memory is corrupted, it could crash anywhere.
I expect you will continue to crash until Slacker is completely off the system. =\

If I remove slacker, would you expect that running slacker from within a browser will eliminate slacker-induced issues?

I will remove it tomorrow and see if it helps, as i can always run slacker from within FF. thanks for the tip...

zachd [MSFT] - 28 May 2008 00:50 GMT When you click the "Web Help" button on the Error dialog, what URL does that take you to?
What changed on your system before this broke?

zachd [MSFT] - 29 Mar 2008 02:31 GMT Yeah, as was later pointed out, he was running a broken third party component that was feeding bad data to the player. Removing that should have made the problem go away.
The majority of player issues I'm aware of are caused by bogus/broken third party filters. So if you're on a clean system, you would be much less likely to run into issues. =\
