When I try to undo a restore point, a get an error message that the operation
has failed because of an unknown error. Then none of my other restore points
will work, either. Anybody know what goes on?

Hello Chester,
Can you undo a system restore in SAFE mode ? Or, choose a more later
date and do a system restore, in safe mode ?

When doing a System Restore in Safe Mode it's probably best to create a
Restore Point just prior to performing the restore operation due to not
being able to "undo" the restore when performed in Safe Mode.

Hello t-4-2 an d Ramone,

Thank you, it worked in safe mode. I don't have any of the software listed
on the page that Ramone linked me to. Must be some other software conflict?
Am I right in thinking that it doesn't matter as long as I'm able to do a
restore in safe mode?

thanx again,
Chet

Hello Chester,
The link given to you is basically for XP, although some in the context
is "generic".
You are not out of the wood yet. Yes it does matter. You shouldn't have
to do restore in safe mode, unless there is something wrong.
I'm assuming that you are now back in normal mode. Please go back to
system restore window, create a restore point. Then use that point you
created and do a system restore again. If all goes well, maybe you are
out of the wood.

Out of curiosity, what prompted you to undo a restore point ??

Tried to do restore in normal mode. No dice. Tried turning off virus scanner.
Still no dice. Can do restore only in safe mode. Have no idea what's wrong.

Hello Chester,
Did you create a restore point as I asked you ? If yes, were you
successful in doing so ? You don't have SP1, do you ?

Right, I created a restore point and then tried to use that one to do the
system restore, which failed. Do not have sp1. Should I?

Hello Chester,
Forget about SP1.Let's take care of this problem first.
Please click the link at the end of the post. The screenshot shows a
window when one tries to create a restore point. Compare that window to
the one you would have. Does yours have a checkmark in front of  OS (C)
(System) ?? If no , your system restore is Not turned on. Put a
checkmark on it ( NOT on Local Disk (D) ).

Hi, sorry for the delay. My System Properties window shows HP (C:) (System),
which is checked, and Recovery (D:), which is not. It doesn't say anything
about Local Disk. But it looks like the recovery is turned on.

Chester,
I'm running out of idea. Please give me the Exact error message,
verbatim. Thank you.
You still have not told me why you started undo system restore.

Error message said "Restore failed because of an unknown error. Try using
another restore point." But the other restore points don't work, either.
Could they be corrupted somehow? I was originally trying to do a restore
because system seemed unusually slow, even for Vista, and I though an earlier
restore point might fix that. I dunno, maybe this is just one of those things
that has no simple solution.

Hello Chester,
I had spent 2 hours+ searching for an answer from MS Help & Support,
Knowledge Base, and internet. Nothing came up. If it is of any
consolation, I found an article "How-to Geek" which says that it is
better to do system restore in safe mode. I'm not convinced.
Anyway, it got me thinking. You were successful in safe mode, but which
restore point did you choose? Or, did you just click NEXT?  What I mean
is : did you pick a date when everything was ok as your restore point ?
Do you know what I'm getting at ?

I don't know what the problem is either and I have the same problem. I check
every now and then for solutions, but since I can't find one, I do the same
thing I suggested to Chet, which is to create a "System Restore Point"
(while logged in normally), then boot into "Safe Mode" and perform the
restore operation. It may not be the best way but at least the "System
Restore Point" that I make just prior can be used as an "undo".

Wow, I can't believe you spent so much time researching this. Thank you. I
can't recall for sure which restore point I picked, but I'm quite sure it was
one when the system was working OK, since that was my intention. I'm curious:
Why are you not convinced it's better to do a system restore in safe mode,
since that seems to work better, at least for me? Can you give me the url for
the "How-to Geek" site? I'd like to read that, too.

I tried to post this reply last night, but for some reason it didn't make
it. Anyway, I don't recall exactly what restore point I picked, but it had to
be one that would have been when the system was working well, because that
was my reason for doing it. By the way, can you give me the url for the
"How-to Geek" article? I'd like to read that.

And I can't believe you've put in so much time on this. Thank you

Once again, thank you for all your help and research. It actually was quite a
help. At least I know I'm not the only one with this little bug, if that's
what it is.

Best,
Chet
