carl43m - 19 May 2008 16:05 GMT I recently noticed that I have two icons for volume--one says realtek HD audio and the other says realtek HD audio manager. I have no idea what the difference is between these two items. Anyone have any clarifying info for me? Thanks. Carl
Mark L. Ferguson - 19 May 2008 16:16 GMT sndvol32 is the 'mixer' for volume levels. The other manages effects, muting, other sound functions.

One is the default white Volume control icon from Vista, the other is the orange/red one that comes from when you install the Realtek HD audio driver.
You can turn off the white one by right clicking on the Taskbar and click "Properties", "Notification Area" tab, uncheck "Volume".
The orange/red one opens the Realtek HD Audio Manager Contol Panel item. You can turn off that icon by right clicking on it and click "Sound Manager", click on the "i" button in the bottom right corner, undot (unblue) the "Display icon...." button.
They both control the volume levels, but the orange/red one has more options available.
Hope this helps, Shawn

carl43m - 19 May 2008 17:17 GMT Thank you -that was quite helpful I only had one icon at first and the second showed up after a driver update I believe--maybe it was always there -I have only had the system a few days but was thoroughly confused . Thanks again. Carl

After a system crash necessitated reinstalling Vista Home Premium, the Orange one is gone. Will downloading and reinstalling the RealTek driver bring it back?

If you have the Realtek HD Audio Manager icon in the Control Panel (Classic View), then you can turn it back on yourself by clicking on the icon and clicking the "i" button in the bottom right corner, dot (turns blue) the "Display icon...." button.
If you do not have this icon, then yes reinstalling the drivers will add it back.

Buddha - 19 May 2008 21:13 GMT I downloaded the RealTek install package as suggested but still don't get the orange icon or a control panel entry. I get a blue icon with a white dot and round brackets, with a right click option labeled Sound Manager that appears to do nothing at all. It also opens a volume control box identical to the one provided by Vista. The orange icon I lost had numerous other options, but I can't figure out where it went or how to get it back.

Did you install the driver twice? First time uninstalls the old one, then the second time installs the new one. You have to restart the computer after each install to.

Buddha - 19 May 2008 23:40 GMT Installed again to make sure (4 times now). I get a tray icon OK, but it's still a dot bracketed by 2 parenthesis, not the orange speaker icon I used to get. A right click on the tray icon lists Multimedia, Windows Media Player, Sound Recorder, and Volume Control that matches the regular Windows Volume Control. The old Orange icon listed various other options, but I can't seem to get them back no matter how often I install.

I must admit that I'm stumped. It appears that you are doing everything correctly and you are even getting a icon from it. I'm not sure why you would not get the same icon from the drivers as you did before. Does the options it does give you in the icon work properly?

Buddha - 20 May 2008 07:58 GMT Volume Control gives the same display as the one that comes with Vista. Sound Recorder opens the Sound Recorder. Media Player opens Windows Media Player. Multimedie opens the Sound Control. Sound Manager does nothing. I still get the Icon with the dot and 2 sets of brackest around it, as opposed to the Orange speaker Icon I used to get, and I can't find a way to display the extended sound options I had before either.

I have heard of some Realtek Audio devices not getting a "Realtek HD Audio Manager" icon in the Control Panel (Classic View). Perhaps your model number is one of them. ??
What is the model number of your Realtek audio device? You can find in Device Manager under the "Details" tab with "Hardware Ids" under "Property" drop down menu. It will be the number in front of the "&SUBSYS". For example, 885 (for model# ALC885) in "0885&SUBSYS".

Buddha - 20 May 2008 20:50 GMT Mine says 888, if that tells you anything.

That means that your Realtek audio device is the model "ALC888". It is listed as being supported in the WHQL drivers from Realtek.

I'm not sure why you would not have a Realtek HD Audio Manager icon in the Control Panel (Classic View) and the normal orange tray icon for it. Hopefully someone else with the same model number as yours can share their experience with it.

Buddha - 21 May 2008 00:37 GMT Brink,
Thirteenth time (or thereabouts) seems to be the charm here. After following the link you provided and reinstalling for the umpteenth time, the tray icon, control panel icon, etc. all seem to be back to normal. Thanx. I have to admit that I'd be a liar if I claimed I understood all of this, though.

And who says that the number 13 is unlucky. I'm glad to hear that it is back to normal for you now.
Thank you for the feedback, Shawn
