After my update to Vista SP1, or perhaps a bit later, I have noticed
a folder called "found.000" which seems to contain a large number of files
and several folders. for example a folder called "dir000.chk" and files
called things like "BVRPWF2000......" or "EPNDDE30..."
What has happened here? Are these "lost" files due to some disc
error? Or is this some side effect of SP1.

I am running Vista Basic on my laptop.

They are caused by filesystem errors.
These could be caused by a disk error or by a software fault or even by
turning the computer off without shutting it down.
You will find that you are missing some files somewhere and these are what
the system thinks are the remains.
They may be of value to you if you don't keep proper backups.

It would be worth checking the S.M.A.R.T. status for your disk drives to see
if they are suffering from errors and if they are replace them ASAP.

It produced from every disk check. Delete those files because they are
useless.

If they are produced every time you have a problem.
You need to investigate why and fix it.
