I've been using Firefox as my default browser and until today all the
Favorites and links opened in Firefox.  But for some reason IE now fires up
and loads the website when I click on a link or favorite.  Favorites used to
have Firefox icon next to them but these have now changed to IE icon.

I have tried "Make Firefox your default browser" in it options but this has
no effect.

I don't want to use IE if it can be helped but don't know what to do to go
back to how things were.

Your help will be much appreciated.

I'm afraid regardless of what MS tells us, that will never change.  Here
is a link that helps you reset FF as your default.

Does not help, I don't even see FF in the list of default programs to choose
from - they're all MS programs including IE.

The method Ramesh suggested is also in the link I provided.  One of them
should do it.  But you should also try to stop IE from making itself the
default.  That would be in IE, Tools, Internet Options, Programs tab.
Uncheck "Tell me if Internet Explorer is not the default web browser".
And then like you did before, make sure FF has the option checked.

I am afraid none of this works.  In IE options the program is not marked as
default (the button says Make IE the default, so IE is not set as default),
in FF the checkbox is marked to inform me if FF is not the default browser
and it does each time I fire it up even though I choose to make FF the
default browser each time.

Ramesh has replied seperately - please see my reply to his suggestion.

Hi Jan,

Click Start, click Default Programs.
Click Set your default programs.
In the Program List select Mozilla Firefox.

Did what you say, but Firefox does not show up in the list of default

Jan,

I would think you have a third party application that is resetting your
default browser back to IE. Check these programs and see if you have enabled
a setting that will cause this.
It could be a security suite or an AV application such as Norton or an
AS application such as Spybot S&D. It could also be several other types of
applications.

Hi Jan,

Reinstalling Mozilla Firefox should restore the entry (and the protocol associations) back in there. If that does not help, download and run firefox.reg file from here:

(Ignore the article title.)

Reinstalling Firefox has sorted this out.  Thanks for your help.

The Favorites in Start Menu no longer work - I get "Windows cannot find"
followed by name of URL.  I guess this is because these are IE favorites and
can't open in Firefox.
