Microsoft was set to announce Thursday that it would make the
interchangeable document format of a competitor available in its own
market-leading Office 2007 software during the first half of 2009.

The company, under pressure from European regulators, national standards
organizations and its own government clients, said it planned to give
customers the ability to open, edit and save documents in Open Document
Format - the main competitor to Word - through a free update.

Sounds like a good idea from M$ point of view.. customers don't need open
office if they have M$.

Exactly. And they don't need MS office if they have OpenOffice.

If they have OpenSoresOffice they are screwed.  They really need MS Office
to do any real work.  OpenSores Office is a piece of crap.

Anybody who uses OpenSoresOffice is real poor.  Kind of like Alias and Adam
the retard.

Funny, when we use Open Office to create invoices, the clients have no
problem reading them with MS Office and no problem paying them. Do you
consider getting paid a part of "real work"?

The fact that you think that someone who doesn't want to waste money on
a program when a comparable one is available for free is poor writes
volumes about your lack of self confidence. Like Frank, you think that
having money means you are better than others, which, of course, is not
true.

The fact that anyone with any software can create simple documents,
technically down leveled to a common format that can be read by most,
does not mean that all OO documents are going to show the same format in
other programs as they do in OO.

This is seen time and time again when using Open Source formats with
non-Open Source programs.

Which is why, and rightly so, the EU is doing something about it and
Microsoft seems to be willing to comply. When there's total
interoperability, will you still pay hundreds of dollars for MS Office?

Since many medical and business apps are integrated into MS Office, yes,
for the ones that need that functionality.

For customers that don't need the functions in MS Office that they've
had available for a decade and never used, OO is a great tool, once the
document formats properly show the SAME on each system.

For home users and small businesses that don't have issues with document
formats, OO is a great solution.

Why do you post to someone who has you killfiled? Oh, I know it's for

mainly Frank and Albright in this NG.

You have destroyed yourself in this NG. And this looks very bad that you

Have a brain problem, Vista? Leythos replied to me. Ergo, he doesn't
have me kill filed. And, as this newsgroup is read by more people than
Leythos, others can benefit from the post. Well, everyone but someone
like you, Frank and Bill Yanaire who can only insult the poster and can

if you want to reply in public to a public posted message.  Use the NG.

Actually, my kill file has a time-limit, and then I start seeing their

And, you might have read the thread, I actually replied to Alias,

That's not it Alias, it's about giving people more than what they've
asked for because they don't know it's available.

In the early days we had ASCII only, now have tons of fonts, formatting,
etc... We can place pictures in our documents, etc...

The programs that sparked those functions and advances were not open
source, were not a common document format, etc...

Nothing ever is created out of living down to the lowest level.

I like what I can do with MS Office and that it's easier than OO.

I save as W2000/XP when sending to a MS-Office user.  And haven't seen or
heard of those formatting problems for years.  It was a problem some many
years ago back in the version 1.x days but has been since corrected.

But you also just made a case for support of ODF.  ODF allows multiple
applications to use the files as they are standardized.  That way you are
not beholding to one application from one vendor that runs on one
platform that you may or may not not be running in 5 years.

I agree, ODF is a good method. I would also suggest that since you're
using the NON-MS side, you don't have much to worry about, since your
documents are the lowest common format. It's when you have to interact
with people that use MS formats that the problem comes in.

So, if you're interacting with MS people you are often not getting the
same document format that they see.

 - runs on all my PCs, XP, Vista, Linux, Solaris.

Actually, with open Office you get a ISO standard file format.  The

Open Office == MSOffice + $$$

And MS Office can't read or produce the standard format.  Nor does it
work on Linux and others.
