I keep trying and trying to install this update but it fails every time,
returning no error message other than "failed" and the ubiquitous code 57A
that takes you into the typical MS loop of useless so called help that ends
up eating its tail.

I have the OSE startup type set to manual it is not that.

Other updates install just fine. It is just this one that fails.

I have Vista Home Premium running on a Core Duo laptop, Word 2007
(12.0.6015.5000) with Office 2007 (12.0.6017.5000).

Any help appreciated.

Try downloading the update manually and installing it manually. If that
doesn't work, the experts in the Word newsgroup will probably know the
answer. You might want to crosspost the post you make to the Word newsgroup
to the Windows Update newsgroup.

This shows just how non-existent MS support is. I don't live in the US. When
I go to that page to get phone numbers for my country I get this page -
http://www.microsoft.com/protect/default.mspx which is useless and seems
designed solely to get me to install Silverlight which I do not want to use.
Choose "Get Support" from the menu and you end up where you started. Choose
"World Websites" and you just get the same page on a local server. Where is
the page that tells me a phone number I can ring in my country to speak to a
real person who will help me?

On top of this problem which I've given up trying to solve, my computer now
only works in safe mode because I get a event ID 4609 error message on
startup and no programs will run. Where is the support?
