modub - 22 May 2008 21:43 GMT I find it amazing there is no fax in vista home
I purchased win 95 and could fax I purchased win 98 and could fax I purchased xp and could fax I purchased vista and cannot
I will not sing up to a fax service with a third party company as i see this as a basic use of computers.
Who had the brainwave to leave it out ? When will this be resolved with microsoft to include it as a nother patch ?
Gordon - 22 May 2008 21:48 GMT >I find it amazing there is no fax in vista home Probably because the vast majority of Vista users are on broadband and you can't fax with broadband....
Cameron Snyder - 22 May 2008 23:30 GMT Rubbish, if you have a modem and it is connected to the phone line, you can fax, although in Vista versions other than Ultimate and Business, Microsoft no longer provides it for you. It's cheap enough to buy if you must have. There are even free options to be found by the resourceful and cheapish.
>>I find it amazing there is no fax in vista home > > Probably because the vast majority of Vista users are on broadband and you > can't fax with broadband.... Justbob30 - 23 May 2008 01:41 GMT I don't have a fax modem or a phone line, why would I want fax software? try sending a e mail attachment.....much harder for the receiver to say they never got it, you know where it went, who received it and when they opened it.

Now I am not sure what I am missing here.
Ultimate and Business have FAX? Wow. Most businesses have dedicated fax lines to dedicated fax machines. Never seen a business PC do a fax.
Home users don't generally buy dedicated fax machines and fax lines. They do often share the PC fax with the voice line, when needed. As well as to print/fax to fax machines. Besides, most business users have digital to their office at work, not POTS.
Now to me, it makes more sense to exclude fax from Business and not home versions where they are at least ten times likely to be used or wanted.
Sounds to me when they packaged Vista Premium someone wasn't thinking too hard. Or perhaps they want to entice what I call the double dip. Buy a PC with Vista Premium, decide it isn't good so either by another OS like XP or Ultimate to get what is missing and not working. Pay twice, works once (maybe).

Wow. Most businesses have dedicated fax > lines to dedicated fax machines. Never seen a business PC do a fax. Then you've never seen a business save money on ink for their fax machines. In some countries, signatures are legal by fax or mail and email, or a scanned document, is not a legal signature. I use a fax machine to send multiple copies of a document to my computer which converts it into a .TIF file. It's a lot easier than scanning the document.

Until the explosion of the internet and email, this was big business.
Have you ever heard the name, "WinFax"?
> Home users don't generally buy dedicated fax machines and fax lines. Instead, they bought WinFax. There were millions of copies in use every day.

And even these days, there are many, many businesses and offices that are not large enough to benefit from digital phone systems.

Free downloads maybe.
Harry - 25 May 2008 21:55 GMT Snappy Fax.

I know... I have it and highly recommend it. I used it with XP rather than use the built-in fax. Don't use it with Vista because I cancelled my land-line service (don't need it) when I signed up for cable Internet access.
There are also some good fax/email opportunities out there... very reasonably priced and even include a dedicated phone number.

Cameron Snyder - 23 May 2008 20:34 GMT >> Rubbish, if you have a modem and it is connected to the phone line, you >> can fax, > > Duuuhhhhh I KNOW that idiot, READ MY POST. The words in your post, "you can't fax with broadband...." were simply incorrect. Your subsequent posts are rude and largely incoherent attempts to justify your original misstatement and don't relate to the OP's question. You are clearly a troll with a sad, tiny ego and no useful information.

Fax is a telephone system, not a computer networking function. Yes, if you have a fax modem hooked up tot he phone system, you can fax from your computer, you can do lots of things on a computer with the right hardware and software. If you're using a cable modem, WiFi, or a LAN connection and your computer isn't connected to a telephone line, then you can't.

Gosh, some real truisms there, Steve, but not relevant to the question as to why MS deemed that only Business and Ultimate have a built in fax program.

The big double dip.
Sell a user a crippled Premium or Basic. When the user discovers it is a POS, they spend more for a second OS to get what they need. Top it off, Microsoft is working actively on the triple dip. Win7, many Vista users will scramble to get off the Vista PoC band waggon and buy WinRot 7.
Triple dip, brilliant. 3 year cycle on 5 year PCs and a Vista foul up in- between.
DOS 2.x-6.x, Win 3.x, Win9x. Win NT x, Win 2000x, XP, Linux.

Win NT x, Win 2000x, XP, Linux. Same progression I went through except my first computer was an Apple MacIntosh that had 128K memory and everything had to be written to a diskette. Still use XP for things but the way Windows is going, I feel I should study and get hands on experience with alternatives.

If you don't need to scan documents, you might look at http://www.pamfax.biz/ You have to have Skype to use it, but you can send document anywhere in the world.

That does NOT explain why Home doesn't have a fax program, sorry. I have broadband and one of my computers receives faxes all day long and it is connected to the broadband and to a phone line.

Well the vast majority of HOME computers that I come across are NOT connected by broadband AND a separate analog phone line....most of the people I come across with a HOME computer don't even realise that it MIGHT contain a modem....in fact a goodly number of machines that are sold these days don't even HAVE a modem.....

For those who don't use a fax, you have a point. I thought we were talking about those who do.
