Not like *some* people don't just... download, the product... for free.
Not that I am one of those people (Thunderbird and Open Office for the win!)

Asking Frank that would require him to think. Frank has demonstrated repeatedly that is beyond his ability. Besides, Frank enjoys being a Microsoft shill and shamelessly will try to browbeat anyone in to throwing more money away on more Microsoft crap.

Open Office for free does have a database. Granted that MS Access is the best desktop database it is not included in the standard version of office. Very few users (comparatively) have the professional version of office so we are comparing a standard version of Office for $130.00 against Open Office for free and OO has a database, spreadsheet, writer, draw and presentation program and handles graphics better and runs more efficiently. Granted MS Office does have more features but most people never use them so for most people it is better to use OO. Additionally OO can save and open many formats including its own format that is better and most MS Office formats except the current one that few use since it is not even compatible with the majority of other Microsoft users out there.
Only dingbats like LOL would use the new MS Format because he does not have any one to correspond with anyway.

Who gives a RATS a.s if the grammer isn't up to par? You should talk, your Etiquette isn't up to standard. Etiquette, one aspect of decorum, is a code that governs the expectations of social behavior, according to the contemporary conventional norm within a society, social class, or group. Usually unwritten, it may be codified in written form. Etiquette usually reflects formulas of conduct in which society or tradition have invested.
Maybe you should take a class.

He can't help himself, he's a damn fool as everybody already knows. So I'm afraid your lucid explanation of the differences between versions of MS Office and why it makes sense for most people to at least give Open Office a try to see it if meets their needs is way beyond the primitive grunting, snorting and laughing of a newsgroup buffoon with a IQ below 60.
Daddy Tadpole - 26 May 2008 21:16 GMT If we may leave buffooning to one side, the only thing I miss with OO is the grammar checker. I write mostly in French, and like other grammatically structured languages it's too easy to make elementary mistakes that don't exist in English.
Last time I looked, the OO people were working on it. Must have another look.
BTW, Word's grammar checker is a help, but it's frustratingly stupid - for example if you omit an accent or use the wrong one, it doesn't recognise the word at all. That, and a smallish retirement pension, is one reason I'm trying hard to get away from Microsoft.
Regards

[quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > > That was rhetorical. EVERYBODY knows the answer. Actually OO is the honorable thing to do in some cases.
For example at work we have legit copies of MS Office (Naturally). Some machines only use that kind of thing very occasionally. We "Could" install MS Office just so it is there "In case" it is ever needed, but that would be illegal and against MS EULA. What I am speaking about here are machines that are more or less kept as backups for emergency use.
I seriously doubt that anyone at MS would care about such minimal use / backup installation, but they can't say that in "Legal" terms can they? Unlike "Cloning" a disk drive these machines "Could" be used independently.
So Open Office keeps everyone happy, including MS' Lawyers. So Mr Ballmer can actually blame his own lawyers for encouraging the use of a rival product.
Milt - 25 May 2008 17:45 GMT > No, not if it does the same thing and saves you $300! But it doesn't.
I've frequently tried to get Open Office to deal with an Access 2000 database. After much fighting I finally got it to open but then to get it to be as easy to modify/change as it is in Office? Nope. I wish people would quit trying to say Open Office works exactly the same as MS Office and can read/write exactly the same when it does not. In fact I noticed that when Open Office opened that Access 2000 database, it actually saved a NEW file that it seemed to use to interface with the original database file. It never actually touched the original database file!
Adam Albright - 25 May 2008 18:07 GMT >> No, not if it does the same thing and saves you $300! > [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] >original database file. It never actually touched the original database >file! I was careful to say that Open Office is a good alternative for MOST people, not a cure all. Like in another thread using a newer version of brand name software on older format files doesn't also work as the OP trying to open old Adobe PDF files found out. Open Office may or may not open older files created in different software. That's a given. The point I was making Open Office is a good free alternative if you're just starting out or are making new records. I ALWAYS try open source alternatives before buying more Microsoft crap.

Ray, if you're suggesting that OO does all the same things that MS Office does then you've not actually used one or both of them.
